Provenance: Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, their sale, Rachel Davis Auction September 21st, 2013, lot 512 Sixth edition (first published in 1872), published in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year and with many more photos and maps than in previous editions of the entire length of the Thames. This is a charming book, with lovely clear maps, and historic photographs of Thames landmarks. Taunt was a renowned photographer of the second half of the 19th-century, having taken his first photograph of a group in Exeter College quad in about 1858. "His photographs of the Oxford area and the River Thames soon attracted praise and he publicized them through magic-lantern lectures and in his book, 'A New Map of the River Thames' (1872), which included paste-down prints and his own survey of the river between Oxford and London. In his later years he became a prolific author of local histories and guidebooks, publishing over fifty titles; he also diversified into printing and became a major publisher of picture postcards. Between 1893 and 1906 he was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. "Taunt was a tall, distinguished-looking man with a full beard, almost invariably seen wearing nautical garb and a yachting cap. He was a competent musician and was at one time organist and choir leader at St Mary Magdalen Church in Oxford; his sense of fun was demonstrated by humorous poetic jingles and annual children's entertainments but he was also a fierce campaigner, battling for clean city water in 1880 and against electric tramways in 1906.Like many other nineteenth-century photographers, Taunt documented the local urban and rural scene but his artistic temperament and historian's eye raised his work on to a higher plane and gave it an enduring appeal" (Malcolm Graham for DNB).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Hardcover. Bound in rust red cloth with gold lettering and decoration on the cover and spine. Thick, bevel edged boards. Front cover is detached (except by a thin length of cloth at the head of the spine) but present. Spine is flat or even concave instead of convex due to all the time that the book has…been open and in use. This is the Third Edition (stated on the title page) and has no printed date on either title or copyright page. A beautiful, original, albumen photograph pasted to inside front cover shows 13 well dressed Victorians in summer whites, corsets and straw hats. One of the men has been pasted on, neatly trimmed to fit between two other people in the group-shot, in what is surely the earliest example of Photoshop-style photo manipulation I have come across. 6 pages of ads at the front. Original owner has written his name on the top corner of each, Byrd M. Tall (or Fall. Also wrote his name on the title page and page following. Byrd and his companions used this book for all it was worth -- he has noted on the large map at the front that the accomplished the trip from Jun 18th to June 23, 1883 - "69 miles in 5 days." with a party of 15 (sometimes less). There are 33 maps tipped in, each with a hand-colored stretch of river and countryside, and each with several small photographs of the scenery pasted down. The past and photos have combined to wrinkle parts of the map-pages, but they remain as charming as can be. In addition, the expedition party has added notes to the (blank) backs of many of the map pages, noting the weather and time of day, quoting from poems, mentioning who was aboard and where they stopped to eat. "2nd night. The Roebuck Inn - not so simple or so rural. stroll in the evening along the high road to hear nightingales." and "Called on Sir Joseph Hooker." (opposite page 70). In collating carefully to describe the book, I see that there are also some notes written in 1884 in a different handwriting. 215 pages in all, the final 40 or so are charming advertisements for gear and shops along the route. Text block (quite remarkably) remains tight. There are 2 Victorian chromolithographed holiday cards tucked inside at the front. Also tucked in at the front is a description of this book clipped from a 1980's ABAA trade publication, with the handwritten note "buy" and dated 1981. (It is listed for $50). Overall just a lovely as can be. I count 33 maps with 97 photos on them, plus 4 additional photos on a sightseeing page plus a frontispiece gravure. Please email with questions or to request photos. Please note if there is a photograph beside this listing, it was put there by ABE, not by me, so it may not accurately show the book I am selling.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. n.d. [around 1880]. 8vo. 5th edition. xi, [2], 220, 63 pp. Complete with tissue-guarded frontispiece of Taunt's houseboat, a full page and a folding map, a folding table of distances, 96 small photographs mounted on 32 double page maps and 1 plate. Also includes a blue paper 4pp ad: "Old Father Tha…mes, The King of British Rivers" bound-in. In the publisher's russet cloth, gilt- and ink-stamped to spine and front board. Henry Taunt (1842-1922) was a professional photographer, author, publisher and entertainer and he produced this first pocket guide to the River Thames to be illustrated with photographs. In the 1860s it covered the upper Thames, but it expanded its range over several editions. In 1872 Taunt published A New Map of the River Thames on a scale of half an inch to a mile. The wet collodion process, invented by Frederick Scott Archer, was the best means to capture negative images on glass until the end of the 1870s, by which time many of Taunt's pictures for his Illustrated Map of the Thames had been taken. He would row his skiff to a location, set up his dark tent, set up his camera and tripod, sensitise and coat the glass plate, immediately make the two- or three-second exposures, develop and fix the images, wash them in river water, perhaps dry them in the sun and row back to his lodgings or set up camp with his assistants. At the beginning of the 1860s this was a notable feat of skill. A very good + copy, tight and bright throughout. Many pages of adverts front and rear.
