Es ist zu wenig, was die Kulturwissenschaften bislang zur Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Medium beigetragen haben. Millionen von Menschen kaufen und spielen, was von bisweilen riesigen Teams von Programmierern und Autoren unter immensem Einsatz von Zeit und finanziellen Mitteln entwickelt wird. Doch die Geschichten, die ästhetischen Dimensionen dessen, was in den elektronischen Spielwelten steckt, werden so lange ignoriert, bis wieder einmal die - mittlerweile schon seit Jahrzehnten stetig wiederkehrende - Frage nach dem schädlichen Einfluss der Computerspiele gestellt wird. Diese Arbeit versucht an zwei Beispielen, dieses zu Schema durchbrechen, stellt keine pädagogischen Fragen, sondern wendet sich vorurteilsfrei dem zu, was an anderen Diskursen in diesem Medium steckt.
