Cloth. Zustand: Very good. First edition of The Naval War of 1812 by Theodore Roosevelt. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, xviii, 498pp, [2pp ads]. Publisher's reddish-brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Illustration of a fully rigged sailing vessel on cover. Cloth binding variant C. This is an ex-library copy, with location number removed from spine, library bookplate on front pastedown endpaper. Faint library stamp to title page and illustrations. Rubbing to cloth at the spine, rubbing to corners. Scattered foxing throughout, limited impact to text. Brown endpapers, solid text block. (Cole & Vail, A3a) (Howes R431) A presentable example of the true first edition of the first published work by Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt began writing this book during his senior year at Harvard. He later noted that the first chapters he wrote at Harvard ".were so dry that they would have made a dictionary seem light reading by comparison." Over the next two years, he refined this narrative and published the book at the age of 23. This first edition was issued in three types of cloth: dark blue, olive green and reddish-brown. Subsequent editions were printed using the same plates, but with "second edition, third edition, etc." added to the title page.

Erstausgabe
Rare first edition of Theodore Rooseveltâ s landmark first book. Octavo, original blue cloth, titles the spine in gilt, gilt vignette to the front panel. The Naval War of 1812 was Roosevelt s first book, published two years after his completion at Harvard. It is considered a seminal work in its field, and had a massive impact on the formation of the modern American Navy and is considered one of the best in its field. It was a considerable achievement for the 23-year-old Roosevelt, who had to learn the technical side of naval terminology and technology. While it was criticized by some for being scholarly and boring, it did well, going through four editions in six years. In 1886, just four years after being published, the U.S. Navy ordered a copy of the book to be placed on every ship. It also affected Roosevelt's later career, bringing his attention to the importance of a strong navy on power. He would go on to be Assistant Secretary of the Navy, where he modernized and built the American navy. This contributed significantly to America's rise as a world power. In very good condition with some reinforcement to the front endpaper.
