Aconsiderablebodyofempiricalevidencesupportsthemeritof- signingcombinedsystemswhoseaccuracyishigherthanthatofeachindividual classi er,andvariousmethodsforthegenerationandthecombinationofm- tipleclassi ershavebecomeavailable. However,despitetheprovedutilityof multipleclassi ersystems,nogeneralanswertotheoriginalquestionaboutthe possibilityofexploitingthestrengthswhileavoidingtheweaknessesofdi erent classi erdesignshasyetemerged. Otherfundamentalissuesarealsoamatterof on-goingresearchindi erentresearchcommunities. Theresultsachievedd- ingthepastyearsarealsospreadoverdi erentresearchcommunities,andthis makesitdi culttoexchangesuchresultsandpromotetheircross-fertilization.
