Full-Leather. Zustand: Fair. First Edition. 2 vols.: x, [2], 432; 442 p. 17 cm. Full leather with gilt embellishments on spines. Marbled endpapers and all edges red. Spines chipped and deteriorated. Small reference labels on front pastedowns. Ink signature on titles and half title. Vol. I half title missing, stain on text block edge at rear not affecting text. Vol. II cracked at pp. 310-11, tear in half title, some damp stains. Overall, the text blocks are not in bad shape but require rebinding. A classic of early French moral education used by the many aristocratic families that fled the country because of the French revolution. Many editions were published right up until the 1820s, and it was lampooned by a stage production with a similar title.

Nonetheless clean and tidy with no pen-marks save a small neat old former name at the pastedown. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Size: 175mm x 105mm; collation: pp. viii, 376. Complete with 2 full page colour plates and a further two colour engraved subjects at the title -page. Language is French. Thus a scarce book in good condition.

Nouvelle Édition. 12mo (18cm.); full contemporary gilt-tooled sheep, gilt spine with red gilt onlay, marbled endpapers; 396pp.; added engraved title page dated 1822, hand-colored frontispiece and three hand-colored plates. Leather rather scuffed and dried with brief peeling to upper cover and surface scratches to rear cover, spine sunned to tan, damp staining along bottom gutter edges affecting plates, else Very Good, text clean and sound. Near-unrecorded edition of the oft-reprinted pedagogical treatise by Laurent Pierre Bérenger (1749-1822), first published in 1783. We find no copies of this edition (whether under the date 1821 or 1822) in OCLC, COPAC, or KVK as of March, 2021; one copy in the trade (in France), though any copies with hand-colored plates appear to be quite rare.
