Before Marinaro, most fly-fishers in the Eastern United States were conservative traditionalists, basing their approach on orthodox British chalk steam practice, which was far from appropriate, bearing little relevance to local conditions and different hatches. Vincent Marinaro approached his Pennsylvania streams with a fresh eye and developed original fly patterns including terrestrial beetles, ants, grasshoppers, and tiny 'minutiae', duns and spinners based on intense observation of the trout's feeding behaviour and the flies on the water.
