All later issues have a printing statement (Nineteenth Thousand, etc.) and have a location of Allegheny, PA or Brooklyn, NY. Exceedingly scarce with no copies held in OCLC and only a single copy of the Pittsburgh imprint in auction records. 12mo, green cloth, gilt stamped spine lettering with lamp and bible emblem to tail and gilt ruled head and tail, front titled and ruled in blind, floral endpapers. [8], 9-351, [1 ad] pp. + foldout 'Chart of the Ages' printed on blue paper. Illustrated throughout with numerous charts and diagrams. With some very trivial rubbing to the tips, boards just lightly bumped at the fore head corner, small stain to fore head edge, owner's name in pencil to FFEP, exceedingly clean and sharp otherwise. First appearance of the foundational eschatological work of the early Bible Students Movement which would become the Jehovah's Witnesses. Later re-named as the first volume in Russell's 'Studies in the Scriptures' series, millions of copies of 'The Plan of the Ages' were printed over the next half-century; we have seen even the Allegheny printings of the 1886 edition listed in the '470th Thousand.' This was the work that launched a new religious movement and established Russell as one of the most influential American religious leaders to emerge from The Gilded Age. The first volume of an eventual six *Studies in the Scriptures* -- 'Originally published as *Millenial Dawn*, these six volumes off C.T. Russell's writings, composed between 1886 and 1904, contain his main teachings, mainly relating to biblical prophecy, biblical and end-time chronology, and atonement. The first volume, The Divine Plan of the Ages (1886), divides history into three 'dispensations': the first being the period ending with the great flood, the second being 'the present evil world' from the Old Testament patriarchs to modern times, and the third commencing with the 'harvesting' period, which heralded the millenial rule of Christ. . [it] introduced mathematical calculations yielding a program of end-time events, arguing that the Gentile times would come to a close in 1914.' (George Chryssides, Historical Dictionary of Jehovah's Witnesses). 'Mrs. Russell [Maria Russell] claimed she was the co-aurot of volumes 1-4, a claim partly deined by Russell.
