The book was originally issued in French in 1869. / Henri Ferdinand van Heurck was a Belgian diatom specialist and microscopist. Born in an industrialist family, he taught himself microscopy and botany and wrote several pioneering works on diatoms, their study under the microscope and their preservation. Original green cloth, lettered in gilt and with a microscope in gilt on the upper cover, t.e.g., other edges uncut. Two minor marks on the upper cover, inner hinges just cracking, minor foxing on the first and last two leaves, otherwise a very good copy of this handsome book. First edition in English of this comprehensive guide by one of the leading names in microscopy. A specialist in diatoms, in 1889 he designed the renowned Van Heurck microscope for W. Watson and Sons. This translation, by Wynne E. Baxter (1844-1920), is from the 1891 fourth edition and is augmented with new material by Van Heurck (1839-1909). The first edition was published in 1865 in French. Large octavo. Mounted photogravure portrait frontispiece of author with tissue guard, 2 plates, numerous illustrations within text. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover stamped with gilt microscope and framed in gilt, rear cover framed in blind, dark brown coated endpapers, top edge gilt. Gilt bright, hint of wear to spine ends and corners, inner hinges split but holding, foxing to frontispiece, cords occasionally visible, a handful of scientific annotations in pencil: a very good copy.
