Neuware - Presenting the Belgian artist Michaël Borremans's newest group of psychologically charged paintings, this catalogue highlights his exceptional technical skill, interest in figuration, and innovative approach to mise-en-scène."Everything is a self-portrait. And now I have been painting monkeys. . . . It's like making a movie." Michaël Borremans, Interview magazine As a pendant to his acclaimed catalogue The Acrobat, The Monkey showcases seventeen paintings that reveal his interest in exploring surface and artifice. Borremans portrays mysterious sittersincluding the titular monkeys, which are glazed toy figurinesand depicts enigmatic scenes that simultaneously invite viewers in and keep them at bay. Katya Tylevich's insightful commentary delves into the depths of Borremans's compositions, connecting the themes and motifs in The Monkey to those present in previous bodies of work. Tylevich delves into the complex emotional and art-historical registers at play in the artist's new paintings and maps the trajectory of his practice, observing other instances of repetition and fabulation across his practice. The publication, featuring this essay alongside beautifully illustrated images of the new paintings, serves as the ideal complement to the artist's 2024 exhibition at David Zwirner, London.

Neuware - 'Michaël Borremans may be the greatest living figurative painter.' -John Vincler, The New York Times ''The Acrobat' provides an opportunity - all too rare on this side of the Atlantic - to see the genius of Borremans in the flesh. It's painterly magic. A major New York museum retrospective is long overdue.' -John Vincler, The New York Times Recalling classical painting, both through technical mastery and choice in subject matter, Borremans's depictions of the surprising and the bizarre invites a second look. Uncanny scenes of figures looking at blurred acrobatic displays, hooded subjects rendered in Rembrandt-esque lighting, or solemn portraits demonstrate Borremans's unique vision. In this recent body of work, Borremans continues to draw the viewer in closer with his intimately scaled paintings of mysterious figures in peculiar arenas. Accessible yet full of rich detail, this pocket-size book features fifteen masterful works offering a mystifying narrative. An illuminating text by Katya Tylevich mines the scenes Borremans sets, conjuring the multidimensionality of the works' emotional power and their unique place in the lineage of art history.

In den WarenkorbPaperback, 110x162mm, 60 pages, 16 colour illustrations, only English edition. Fine conditon ISBN 9783775735018. Originally trained as a photographer and graphic designer, Belgian artist Michael Borremans (*1963 in Geraardsbergen) has made a name for himself with absurdly ominous and enigmatic works of art. This publication presents a unique selection of a dozen paintings in a revealing text and significant pictures. The artist's paintings are closely intertwined with his other drawings, and films. Borremans operates in an area bordered by all the various media. His scenarios are full of references and allusions that afford viewers a variety of possible interpretations while resisting being joined together to form a definitive whole. What are actually mutually exclusive elements, such as realism and fantasy, the ephemeral and the manifest, irony and confusion, are closely interwoven in his visual worlds, and there is only a fine line between a recognizable, everyday reality and a bizarre dream world. 0 g.

Known for his ability to recall classical painting, both through technical mastery and subject matter, Borremans's depiction of the uncanny, the perhaps secret, the bizarre, often surprises, sometimes disturbs the viewer. In this series of work, children are presented alone or in groups against a studio-like backdrop that negates time and space, while underlining the theatrical atmosphere and artifice that exists throughout Borremans's recent work. Reminiscent of cherubs in Renaissance paintings, the toddlers appear as allegories of the human condition, their archetypal innocence contrasted with their suggested deviousness. In his accompanying essay, critic and curator Michael Bracewell .takes an in-depth look into specific paintings, tackling both the highly charged subject matter and the masterly command of the medium. He writes, "The art of Michael Borremans seems always to have been predicated on a confluence of enigma, ambiguity, and painterly poetics-accosting beauty with strangeness; making historic Romanticism subjugate to mysterious controlling forces that are neither crudely malevolent nor necessarily benign." Published on the occasion of Borremans's eponymous exhibition at David Zwirner in Hong Kong, 0 g.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: gut. 2005. Ausstellungen: S.M.A.K., Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent 5.2.-10.4.2005 Parasol Unit, London 3.5.-30.6.2005 The Royal Hibernian Academy, Gallagher Gallery, Dublin 14.7.-4.9.2005 If you are a lover of painting and art books, this first work on Belgian artist Michael Borremans is well worth adding to your collection. I think Borremans has something quite new to bring to the figurative tradition. His subtle, subdued, gorgeous works seem to come from the 1930s or 40s, yet they express the anxiety of our era. The book is small, just 9.75 x 6 inches, so the reproductions are small too. Most are well-presented, though the color on some looks iffy. Some works have been enlarged to cross the gutter, which can be frustrating. But this is still a painter worth getting to know, and thus the book is worth it. A decade from now you'll be glad that you have this first book on the artist on your shelf. Borremans's Zeichnungen/Tekeningen/Drawings is an excellent book, but it's harder to get and his drawings are quite different from the paintings. I recommend both books. ISBN 9783775724418. The films, paintings, and drawings by Belgian artist Michael Borremans (*1963 in Geraardsbergen) overwhelm the viewer through the use of deceleration, precision, and vortex. His seductive works contain timeless images of internal drive and external force, of the latent pressure involved in being human. Behind a veil of stylistic perfection, the artist simulates common rituals of interpretation and meaning by deliberately inserting mistakes and vagaries. His intensely atmospheric images are puzzles involving political and psychological patterns of perceiving the world, which oscillate in a camouflaging, fragile way between inexorable realism and nebulous distance. With texts by Martin Germann and Hans Rudolf Reust and a foreword by Veit Gorner, the volume presents a selection of drawings and excerpts from Borremans's filmic oeuvre. It also includes a series of new paintings. 360 g.

Published in conjunction with a combined exhibition of work by Micha l Borremans and Mark Manders at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, this volume documents what turned out to be an remarkable encounter between these two European artists. The delicate experiment of a double show like this one forces interference and tension between two distinct bodies of work, with the work of one artist providing the framework for the other, and vice versa. Nevertheless, it is an exemplary show in which a kind of choreography between Borremans, a painter, and Manders, a sculptor and installation architect, emerges through a sombre colours and formal contrasts. 0 g.

Since devoting himself to art in the late nineties, Michael Borremans (*1963 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium) has created a strikingly mature body of work that has captured international attention. The disparate spaces he imagines in his paintings, drawings, sculptures, and films are based on an uncanny sense of dislocation and often unsettling beauty. Rendered in complex palettes and exquisite techniques, Borremans's works embrace a rich legacy of artistic progenitors yet remain firmly anchored in the present. Featuring nearly two hundred works created over a fourteen-year period, this large-scale publication includes many works not previously reproduced in books or catalogues, offering the most complete overview of Borremans's oeuvre to date. In addition to an interview with the artist, it includes fifty-nine highly individual contributions by writers, curators, filmmakers, and musicians who address selected works by the artist. 0 g.
