The author experimented it successfully among the natives of Bengal James Esdaile commissioned the duty of editing the case studies presented in this book to his brother David Esdaile, who did so on the basis of long correspondences mailed to him by Dr James from India.

What the author now offer to the public is the result of only eight months mesmeric practice, in a country charity hospital, but it has been sufficient to demonstrate the singular and most beneficial influence that Mesmerism exerts over the constitution of the people of Bengal, and that painless surgical operations, and other medical advantages, are their natural birthright, out of this, they will be no longer deprived. The subject of the book is very delicate. There is no statement in the book to which exception may justly be taken. The book is immensely beneficial to readers. About the Author: - James Esdaile, a Scottish surgeon, who served for twenty years with the East India Company, is a notable figure in the history of mesmerism. Esdaile is thought by many to have been a pioneer in the use of hypnosis for surgical anaesthesia in the era immediately prior to James Young Simpson's discovery of chloroform. However, Esdaile had studied neither hypnotism nor Mesmerism himself. Although some would trace the practice of hypnotherapy back to Faria, Gassner, and Hell, it is conventional to trace what we now know as hypnotism back to the Scottish surgeon James Braid's reaction to a public exhibition of mesmeric techniques given by Charles Lafontaine in Manchester on 13 November 1841. 'Esdaile performed a variety of surgical operations on Hindus, upon many of whom he appears successfully to have induced hypnotic anesthesia. However, his similar attempts with Europeans were not so successful.' [Garrison & Morton]. / In the early part of the 19th century, the successful practice of somnambulism, a development of Mesmerism, spread throughout Europe. 'In the British Isles, James Esdaile and John Elliotson of Edinburgh adopted it, being convinced that it would prove an infallible agency for the relief of pain during surgical operation. . . Because the leading surgeons were skeptical of this 'remedy,' Esdaile journeyed to India to continue his experiments. According to FUlop-Miller, members of certain Indian castes had known for centuries of a process akin to somnambulism, calling it Yar-Phoonk.
