Erstausgabe
First edition, second issue, in a variant binding not mentioned by bibliographers. Heinemann printed 3,000 copies, but Maugham was disappointed by the sales figures, blaming his publishers for their lack of success. The remaining sheets of the first edition were sold to the Times Book Club, which issued this copy. The club acted as a lending library in return for an annual subscription, and also allowed books to be bought at a discounted rate. This second issue copy matches Stott's description of the first issue publisher's remainder binding, the only difference being the Times Book Club logo. Stott does not record this binding for the second issue. Loren and Frances Rothschild W. Somerset Maugham Collection 32; Stott A7b. Octavo. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt, spine and front board lettered and decorated in black with author's symbol and Times Book Club device. Spine cocked and darkened, binding soiled, faint ring mark to front cover, top edge dust-toned, fore and bottom edges foxed, internally clean. A very good copy.
