This book can therefore make no claim to be a work of original scholarship or research; it aims rather at presenting a clear view of Mendelssohn's life and works, coloured neither by the exaggerated hero-worship by which they were at first surrounded nor by the equally exaggerated denigration that followed. We can see more easily now the curiously uneven quality of his output, and distinguish between the works that merely reflect the social background against which they were written, and those that glow with an individual imagination; similarly his personality can be seen now as something more complex and contradictory than was often imagined.
