In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression, Winston Churchill's copy, annotated by him, with his posthumous bookplate (and that of his son) to the front pastedown. John Morley (1838-1923) was one of the leading British politicians of the late Victorian and Edwardian period, who resigned from the cabinet (ending his career) on the outbreak of the First World War. This book prints his resignation memorandum for the first time, describing the events of July-August 1914 from his perspective, and includes an introduction by F. W. Hirst. It was published by his nephew Guy Morley following his uncle's death - Morley deemed that the need for secrecy and the passions of the moment had now passed. Churchill was with Morley in the cabinet, took a leading position in the First World War, and gave his own account of Morley's resignation in The World Crisis. Churchill has made eight pencil annotations. The most notable is a comment on page xviii, where against Hirst's statement that Morley "used his influence at every opportunity to prevent friendship from France developing into hostility towards Germany", Churchill has written "But they were at that time the same things". Most of his other annotations draw attention to references to himself. His other annotations are: p. xvii - a question mark against the word "other", in the statement "England, more than any other non-insular power, has a direct and positive interest in the maintenance of the independence of nations". pp. 4 & 5 - lines in the margin against references to himself, and a correction to add the word "to". p. 24 - lines in margin against a reference to himself: "if there is a war, Winston will beat Lloyd George hollow, in spite of ingenious computation". p. 26 - lines in the margin against the reference "I look forward to but everlasting wrestles with Winston (at whom I looked with paternal benignity), without being able to contribute a single useful word". p. 27 - circling the word "three", in the statement "we three resigners present had in fact resigned". p. 32 - a two or three word comment, illegible, next to Morley's terminal comment that he will imitate Michelangelo's Pensieroso "with a firm mind pondering stern things". Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Housed in custom red cloth chemise within red quarter morocco slipcase. Randolph Churchill's bookplate additionally on the rear pastedown. Very light rubbing: a near-fine copy.
