Frontispiece engraving with tissue guard. Title page dated 1895. Copyright page states Third Edition. (The first two were 1885 and 1887.) 217 pages plus a long catalogue of other books dated 1895. Binding good and clean and tight. Clean inside. Small bookplate on inside front cover with the name Irwin Laughlin and motto. A scarce nineteenth century translation of Sappho. Of the approximately 10,000 lines of poetry that Sappho is thought to have written, only about 1,500 have survived. Many of those were discovered in 1879 (in a rubbish heap in Egypt), sparking a new interest in her work (thus, this edition). 170 fragments published here in both Greek and English, along with a nice gravure of the papyrus 'Fayum' fragments, and long biography and bibliography. Second and expanded edition, signed limited issue, number 9 of 25 large paper copies signed by the translator, and with the limitation hand-written by him "Twenty-five copies of this book have been printed on Large Paper. Each one is numbered and signed by me, this copy being No. IX. Henry T. Wharton, May I, 1887". Unsurprisingly uncommon thus. This highly influential and comprehensive translation of Sappho notably restored the feminine pronouns to her work, and includes "a compilation of explanatory notes, various appendices, and a bibliography that lists editions, translations, and imitations if Sappho over the centuries" (Prins, p. 53). Significantly Wharton attempted to portray Sappho, "as a poet who loved women 'purely'", never sexually, "construing her as a schoolmistress for young women" (Prins, p. 59).
