Neuware - A comparison of Soviet and U.S. forces in the NATO Center Region has necessitated the development of new tactical doctrine and training techniques to counter the numerical superiority of the Red forces and the wide frontages occupied by U.S. divisions. Experience has shown that logistics doctrine must compliment and support the tactical concepts to successfully accomplish the combat mission. This thesis attempts to determine if the existing doctrine is sufficient for the mechanized infantry division support command commander to establish responsive logistic support during wide frontage defensive operations. The investigation is focused on an analysis of historical data, current published doctrine and an area of operations model. The dimensions used in the model are similar to those used in the scenario oriented recurring evaluation system model of Europe (SCORES). Analysis indicates that a wide frontage operation will excessively strain the capability of the division support command using current doctrine. Existing logistics doctrine designed for conventional defensive tactics must be amended for a wide frontage defense situation.…

Neuware - The U.S. Forces European Theater General Board study of mechanized cavalry units illustrates how a systemic study of combat experience can guide interconnected changes to military doctrine, organizations, and equipment. The General Board conducted its study of mechanized cavalry units between September 1945 and January 1946. The study's final report recommended that the Army create a corps cavalry regiment that would perform the full range of traditional horse cavalry missions, including reconnaissance, security, offensive combat, defensive combat, and special operations. In early 1946, planners designing the force structure of the U.S. Zone Constabulary based the design of the constabulary regiments upon the organization proposed by the General Board. The General Board study of mechanized cavalry units also influenced post-war boards that proposed changes to the doctrine, organization, and equipment of future armored units. In 1948, Army Field Forces created a new type of unit, the Armored Cavalry Regiment (Light). The design of this organization, the selection of its equipment, and its doctrine were guided by the recommendations from the General Board study. This type of regiment was unusual; the U.S. Army was the only NATO or Warsaw Pact country to organize a corps cavalry regiment with a broad mission profile rather than relying upon smaller units designed strictly for reconnaissance. Armored Cavalry Regiments remained part of the U.S. Army's force structure until 2011. Thus, the General Board's recommendations had a significant long-term influence on the U.S. Army. The investigation focuses on the reconstitution process in general, and on the reorganization process in particular. Existing doctrinal publications and research reports on reorganization are reviewed for information appropriate to an understanding of the process of reorganization. The principal referenced document is a draft operational concept for reconstitution currently being developed by the US Army Training and doctrine Command. The thesis consists of the following major topics: a discussion of reconstitution, combat effectiveness indicators, historical examples of reorganization, existing US Army reorganization doctrine, the reorganization process, and an analysis of the mechanized infantry company organization. Research indicated that the process of reorganization has not received such emphasis within the US Army in the past. In recognition of the need for such actions on the full spectrum of the modern battlefield, the US Army Training and Doctrine Command is currently developing operational concepts for reorganization. Research identified several factors that impact on a mechanized infantry company's ability to reorganize during combat.
