Er war ab 1937 Professor, zunächst am Seismologischen Institut der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Leningrad, danach an der Universität Alma Ata und ab 1944 an der Leningrader Universität. Michlin ist durch zahlreiche Monographien und Lehrbücher über Differentialgleichungen und Integralgleichungen aus der mathematischen Physik sowie Methoden ihrer numerischen Behandlung bekannt. Zu seinen Doktoranden zählen Arno Langenbach, Wladimir Mazya und Siegfried Prößdorf, der auch viele Bücher von Michlin ins Deutsche übersetzte. Er war Mitglied der Accademia dei Lincei und Ehrendoktor der Technischen Universität Chemnitz (1968). Im Jahr 1970 wurde er zum Mitglied der Leopoldina gewählt.
