Hard bound. Zustand: Very Good+. Reprint. Varieties Sinologiques no. 55. An exhaustive scholarly study of the traditional legal / penal code of China, as it existed in the late Imperial era. The author, a Jesuit missionary, resided in Shanghai for some 25 years near the end of the Qing Dynasty. The scope of the work is as vast as one would expect of the complete Chinese legal code and ranges from crime among individual citizens of all sorts, from petty theft to murder, as well as commercial crime and crimes against the emperor and state, detailing standard punishments for those found guilty. Of particular interest is a section dealing with the rights and permitted practices of representatives of foreign religions, reflecting an openness sadly no longer the case in modern China. A fascinating work as well as important historical reference. Reprint of Shanghai 1924 first edition. 746 pp., in French with Chinese throughout. Blind stamp on title and last page, ink stamp on copyright page, all internal pages lightly browned around outer edges. Otherwise, an excellent copy, clean and crisp inside and out. Bound in dark green cloth. Size: 20 x 15 cm.
