4 Bl., 113 S., 42 Bl. Ganzpergamentband der Zeit im Format 40 x 27 cm mit rötlichem Marmorschnitt. The famous magnum opus of the French architect and military engineer Pierre Le Muet (1591-1669), containing a collection of models for Parisian-style townhouses. The work was first published in 1623 and in an expanded edition in 1647, which included a second volume entitled "Augmentations de nouveaux bastimens" (Augmentations of New Bastions). Le Muet, who initially focused on fortifications and had accompanied the royal troops in southern France as a military engineer, devoted himself primarily to townhouse and ch?teau architecture from 1637 onward. Among the ch?teaux he designed are the Ch?teau Chavigny (shown in designs 18 to 25 of the "Augmentations"), the Ch?teau de Pont-sur-Seine, and the Ch?teau de Tanlay. This second edition of the "Maniere" also shows him as the builder of three Parisian residences: the Maison Tubeuf and the H?tels Coquet and d'Avaux. The "Maniere" contains, in addition to the engraved title page, 53 copperplate engravings (exterior views and floor plans), while the volume "Augmentations" contains 25 copperplate engravings, some of which are large-format and can be folded out multiple times (up to a size of 74 x 39 cm). The copperplate engravings were produced after drawings by Muet by the architect and engraver Jean Marot (1619-1679), whose engravings enjoyed high esteem and are among the most important sources on French architecture up to the reign of Louis XIV. Front cover with minimal damage, one edge slightly bumped; two leaves with corner tears (without loss of text or image). Otherwise a very good copy of this famous work, otherwise unavailable in the expanded 1647 edition; pages clean and almost spotless; all plates in pristine condition.
