Summary:For their supply of freshwater, both Palestinians and Israelis rely heavily on underground aquifers beneath Israel and the Palestinians territories. These aquifers are at the heart of ongoing negotiations between Palestine and Israel, as water is often alluded to as a major obstacle to peace. This book presents a framework for the joint management of shared aquifers, with specific reference and proposals for the major Israeli-Palestinian case: the Mountain Aquifer. It is the first book to explicitly address the issue of cross-border groundwater management, an issue that is increasingly becoming a focal point of discussions at both the international and cross-jurisdictional levels. It is also the first book to focus on groundwater resources in the Israeli-Palestinian context; groundwater being the most difficult question facing water negotiators in the Middle East today. Interested readers will include researchers, scholars, and students in natural resource management and Arab-Israeli relations; donors, development organizations, NGOs, and development practitioners; and all parties to the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 468 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Forty percent of the world¿s population depends upon increasingly scarce and shared water resources. This situation is critical at both international and national levels not only for socio-economic development, but also for the regional stability. The intensive use of groundwater for irrigation and water supply is adding pressures to scarce water resources and the environment through overexploitation and contamination which result in situations that may lead to conflicts. The book from the NATO ASI on ¿Overexploitation and Contamination of Shared Groundwater Resources Management, (Bio)technological, and Political Approaches to Avoid Conflicts¿ is written by authors from different disciplines and regions of the world. The aim of the book is to contribute to the knowledge of shared groundwater resources management to avoid conflicts by considering multi-disciplinary approaches based on effective and equitable water sharing for all water users through cooperation and within a compassionate ecological framework along with the need for sustainable resources development and the quest for environmental and human security. The scope of the book covers the hydrogeological, environmental, (bio)technological and management aspects of shared groundwater resources integrating social, economic and political dimensions as well as legal and educational perspectives.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Most of the world's freshwater resources in the liquid state (i.e. not in glaciers and polar caps) are underground. As the population grows and demand for water rises, reliance on groundwater increases. In many cases the groundwater underlies boundaries, or is part of a hydraulic system that crosses boundaries. In such cases there is always the danger that the 'prisoner's dilemma' will run its course and all parties will compete over who will pump the most water, ultimately destroying the storage potential to the detriment of future generations of all parties reliant on the groundwater. This book explores the options and means for averting this all too realistic scenario by managing these shared groundwater resources. Nowhere is the likelihood of excessive use of groundwater greater than in the water-scarce Middle East, and especially in the Israeli-Palestinian case. Here both sides are heavily reliant on a shared aquifer, the Mountain aquifer. This book is the outcome of a seven-year effort to find ways to manage the Mountain aquifer, perhaps the most important resource shared by Israelis and Palestinians. As part of this cooperative study, four workshops were held in which a selected number of Palestinian, Israeli, and foreign experts were invited. The chapters in this book were originally presented in one of these workshops. To these papers introductory and concluding chapters were added.
