4 lines ms on verso of a flyer for Michael Rindar's tango lessons, signed by Shaw with customary flourish, folded; v. sl. chipped at edge, fold starting. This note is a memento of a quirky literary anecdote, namely that one of the greatest playwrights in the English language famously but improbably learned to tango while staying in Madeira for a rest cure in 1924. He here addresses his teacher, Micahel Rindar, as 'The only man in Madeira who would teach me anything'. He later confirmed this opinion on the record, telling the New York Times 'He was the only man who taught me anything while I was on a holiday in that land,' adding rather cryptically that 'The tango seemed to me the only modern dance that required either thought or study. You see I must know everything, else I could not write about everything.' Mr Rindar thereby has an oblique but touching claim to having animated a renowned curmudgeon, thereby advancing world literature in some small way. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Two volumes (complete), octavo size, 567 pp., inscribed by Biddle to Angelo Heilprin. An interesting work about the history of the Madeira Islands, inscribed to one fascinating man by another. The author, Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle Sr. (1894-1948) was (per Wiki) "a millionaire whose fortune allowed him to pursue theatricals, self-published writing, athletics, and Christianity on a full-time basis." Born into wealth, he became known not only for his writing but also for his skills in hand-to-hand combat, which he used to train both U.S. Marines and FBI agents. Angelo Heilprin (1853-1907), to whom the set was inscribed, was "mostly known for the part he took [in] the Peary expedition to Greenland of 1891-1892.he was also a mountaineer and.founded the American Alpine Club" (in 1902). He went on an expedition to Florida in 1886 and to Bermuda the following year, both for scientific research. 1888 found him in Mexico ascending volcanos and was the first scientist to arrive in Martinique, when Montagne Pelee erupted in 1902, being the first geologist to ascend a side of the crater. Altogether a most fascinating man. The inscription (in the year of publication), found on the front free endpaper of the first volume, reads thus: "To Professor Angelo Heilprin, / With my very best / compliments, and warm / regards. / A.J. Drexel Biddle / Philadelphia / Sept. 11, 1901". This set published in London by "The Author's Syndicate", which was founded in London in 1890 by the British Society of Authors. Interestingly, this set somewhat scarce in the marketplace, as is another work by Biddle with a similar title ("The Madeira Islands"). As of this writing, we see no copies of this set online. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full navy blue cloth with gilt lettering, ruled borders and armorial crest on the front boards, gilt lettering on the spines, top edges gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, both volumes nicely illustrated with half-tone reproductions of black-and-white photographs, one three-panel folding map in the first volume; octavo size (8 7/8" by 6"), pagination: Vol. I, [1-4] 5-267; Vol. II, [1-4] 5-300. ___CONDITION: A solid very good set, the gilt on the front and top edges bright, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, the folding map without unintended creases or tears, and entirely free of prior owner markings; we are grading as very good due to overall light soiling, we had a professional (name available upon request) strengthen the hinges, head and tail of the spines, the binding is now solid and sturdy. ___CITATION: Gabler no. G13140 for the US (Philadelphia), stated "2nd ed.". ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is unusually heavy and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Presumed Third Printing, First Issue. Octavo (19.25cm); brown vertically-ribbed cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine, triple-ruled border and decorative centerpieces stamped in blind to covers; pale yellow endpapers; [ii],[viii],179,[3]pp. Inscribed in pencil on the front flyleaf: "Hon. J. Collamer / With respects of The Author" (possibly Jacob Collamer, judge and U.S. Senator from Vermont). Tiny chip to upper left corner of rear endpaper, handful of dog-eared pages smoothed out, else very Near Fine. `. Handsome copy of this volume Hawthorne edited for his friend and patron Horatio Bridge (1806-1893), a United States Navy officer. First printed in wrappers in 1845, Journal is the narrative of Bridge's trip on the USS Saratoga, "the flagship of Commodore Matthew Perry, with the mission to stop and search all American ships on the west coast of Africa that might be carrying slaves. That mission was fruitless (they saw none), but Bridge's comments on the efforts of the American Colonization Society in Liberia and on Africa in general were vivid" (Moore, Margaret B. the Salem World of Nathaniel Hawthorne, p.135). An interesting printing, not noted by BAL - "What appear to be first-issue sheets with the Putnam title page intact, gathered in the same form as the Putnam publication, are also found in a typical Ticknor format A binding. When Ticknor and Fields bought the Putnam plates for Mosses and Cruiser at the Bangs Bros. Trade Sale in New York, March 1854, they may have acquired some Putnam sheets that were later bound up in Ticknor style and distributed in an effort to recover some of the purchase costs" (Note: CLARK A14.1.c1). Presentation copies uncommon, with only two noted in Rare Book Hub (PBA, 2019; Goodspeed, 1910). cf.BAL 7597.

(illustrator). First Edition, First State. Small octavo, viii, [v]-vi, 179pp, [32pp ads]. Original printed wrappers, title in black on spine. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Slight lean to text block, faint dampstain to leaves at end of volume, not affecting text, Kennebec Historical Society bookplate on half-title, a very good example. BAL's printing A and wrapper 1, including misnumbered page "x" with "vi" in Preface, copyright information in four lines, and three titles listed under "Library of American Books" on rear cover. (BAL 7597) (Moebs 80) In custom brown cloth clamshell with title printed on paper label. Signed by J.H. Williams on front cover. Joseph H. Williams (1814-1896) served in the State legislature of Maine as both a Senator and House Representative, and he was also Governor of Maine for one year. Williams was a relative of the author of this work, Horatio Bridge (1806-1893). Bridge, a U.S. Navy officer, served aboard the sloop-of-war USS Saratoga off the west coast of Africa from 1843-1844. The USS Saratoga was stationed there to protect American citizens and suppress the slave trade. According to correspondence, Bridge's roommate at Bowdoin College, Nathaniel Hawthorne, allegedly inspired Bridge to keep a journal of his travels, which Hawthorne helped edit and compile into the Journal of an African Cruiser.

First edition of both works, presentation copy from Sarah Bowdich, inscribed at head of the title page of Excursions, "The Revd. Dr. Bellamy, with Mrs Bowdich's grateful respects"; only one other presentation copy has appeared at auction (Forum Auctions, 2020). This copy is complete with the hand-coloured plate of the costume of the Gambia, not present in Abbey's copy. This was the Bowdichs second expedition to Africa. They travelled to the Gambia by way of Lisbon, where T. E. compiled a complete history of all the Portuguese discoveries in Africa, and Madeira "where they remained for some months, collecting geological, geographical, and botanical information" (ODNB). In the Gambia, Bowdich began a trigonometrical survey of the river. "His enthusiasm for scientific observation was said to have cost him his life there, for while taking astronomical observations at night he caught cold, which was followed by fever, resulting in his death, at the early age of thirty-three, on 10 January 1824" (ibid.). Sarah was left stranded in Africa, penniless and with three children to support, so she "set out to make a career of her art in natural history. Arriving back in London in mid-1824 she found that friends had taken up a collection for her support. By the next year she had prepared and published her husband's last manuscript,Excursions in Madeira and Porto Santo, adding three appendices of her own based on her experiences at Bathurst. Most significantly, however, her original descriptions of new species and genera of fish, birds, and plants, evaluated byCuvier, established her as the first woman known to have discovered whole new genera of plants" (ibid.). Theakstone notes that she was described in contemporary journals as the first female traveller in the wild regions of Africa. Provenance: the recipient may be the Hebraist and Swedenborgian Dr John Bellamy (1755-1842), who in 1818 produced an edition of the Bible, "newly translated from the Original Hebrew", and, in 1812, The History of All Religions. Abbey 190; Gay 2983; Hilmy II p. 382; Theakstone, An Encyclopaedia of Nineteenth Century Women Travellers, p. 245. Two works bound in a single vol., quarto (264 x 207 mm). Contemporary diced calf sometime neatly rebacked, smooth spine divided by paired gilt fillets, black label, sides framed with a border of paired gilt fillets enclosing concentric panels of a broad foliate roll, triple blind fillets and circular cornerpieces, gilt foliate cornerpieces, gilt edge roll and turn-ins, Italian on Spanish pattern marbled edges and endpapers. Excursions: hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece, 21 lithographic plates (3 hand-coloured, 6 folding) by and after Sarah Bowdich, 3 of which lithographed by T. M. Baynes after Sarah Bowdich, all printed by Hullmandel, 4 in-text wood engravings; Essay: 3 folding lithographic plates by Sarah Bowdich, 2 of them after Jane Landseer. Binding rubbed, corners a little worn, strip of leather lost from bottom corner of front cover, some foxing, yet this remains a very good, well-margined copy.
