Anew McMaster (né Andrew McMaster, 1891-1962), actor-manager: "His concentration was always complete in Oedipus. He was at his best in the part. He acted along the spine of the role and never deviated from it. As in his two other great roles, Othello and Lear, he understood and expressed totally the final tender clarity which is under the storm, the blindness, the anguish. For me his acting at these times embodied the idea of Yeats' line: 'They know that Hamlet and Lear are gay, Gaiety transfiguring all that dread'. Mac entered into this tragic gaiety naturally and inevitably.".

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Fine. None (illustrator). First edition. The first and limited editions of Landscape and Mac by Harold Pinter, in lovely condition. The first and limited editions of Landscape (978 of 1000) and Mac (885 of 1000), in their original cloth bindings. Mac is inscribed to the front free end paper by Emanuel (Jimmy) Wax, dated 1982. Facsimile of author's signature to the rear of both volumes. Harold Pinter (1930-2008) was a British playwright, screenwriter, director and actor. Pinter was one of the most influential modern British dramatists and won the Nobel Prize in 2005. Landscape is a one-act play, first broadcast on radio in 1968 and first performed on stage in 1969. The play shows the difficulties of communication between two people in a marriage. The dialogue resembles two independent monologues. Landscape was first presented on radio by the BBC on 25th April 1968, directed by Guy Vaesen with Peggy Ashcroft as Beth and Eric Porter as Duff. Mac is Pinter's non-fiction memoir about his brief touring as an actor in Anew McMaster's Irish theatre repertory company, and has a biographical note to the rear of the volume. In original cloth bindings. Externally in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Fine. book.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, limited to 2,000 numbered copies (this being #1924). A presentation copy, fondly inscribed by the author on the title page to Trish [Montemuro] and dated 1983. Slim 8vo. 21pp. Quarter cloth. A very good copy of Pinter's celebration of Anew McMaster, the noted British Shakespearean actor-manager. No dust wrapper called for but supplied here with a fresh sheet of protective acetate. Pinter's holograph signature is printed to the base of page 19, which often appears to cause confusion, but this copy certainly does bear his penmanship, inscribed as it is to Trish Montemuro, who was assistant stage manager of the Pinter-helmed National Theatre production of Giraudoux's 'The Trojan War Will Not Take Place' which ran at the Lyttelton Theatre for 43 performances between May-October 1983 (Pinter's hand written date "May 10 83" was the press night for the show). A very nice association copy. Inscribed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbFirst editions, presentation copies, sent with an autograph letter signed from the playwright to the economist Peter Jay (1937-2024) and his then girlfriend Lizzie Spender. Jay and Pinter knew each other through the playwright's wife Antonia Fraser. Spender is the daughter of the poet Stephen Spender and later the wife of Barry Humphries. The letter thanks the two for a "smashing evening" and gifts them the two books. Both works are eulogies, one of the cricketer Arthur Wellard and the other of the Shakespearean actor Andrew McMaster. Jay was well known for his eulogies, which may explain why Pinter sent him these two works; they also shared a passion for cricket. Arthur Wellard is a rare work, with only four institutional copies held. Loosely inserted as issued is a picture of the Gaieties cricket team, with Pinter seated on the second left and Wellard seated on the right. Mac is the signed limited edition, number 870 of 2,000 copies. Jay's book labels are present in each work. 2 works, octavo. Wellard: original white wrappers, front cover lettered in black; Mac: original green quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream cloth side, green endpapers. A few marks to bindings, Arthur Wellard wrappers a little creased, else very good copies.
