Can we actually see the past through images? Where are the traces of previous lives deposited? Michael Camille addresses these important questions in Mirror in Parchment, a lively, searching study of one medieval manuscript, its patron, producers, and historical progeny. The richly illuminated Luttrell Psalter was created for the English nobleman Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (12761345). Inexpensive mechanical illustration has since disseminated the books images to a much wider audience; hence the psalters representations of manorial life have come to profoundly shape our modern idea of what medieval English people, high and low, looked like at work and at play. Alongside such supposedly truthful representations, the psalter presents myriad images of fantastic monsters and beasts. These patently false images have largely been disparaged or ignored by modern historians and art historians alike, for they challenge the credibility of those pictures in the Luttrell Psalter that we wish to see as real. In the conviction that medieval images were not generally intended to reflect daily life but rather to shape a new reality, Michael Camille analyzes the psalters famous pictures as representations of the world, imagined and real, of its original patron. Addressed are late medieval chivalric ideals, physical sites of power, and the boundaries of Sir Geoffreys imagined community wherein agricultural laborers and fabulous monsters play a similar ideological role. The Luttrell Psalter thus emerges as a complex social document of the world as its patron hoped and feared it might be. / Contents Acknowledgements Preface Introduction: The Manuscript as Mirror 1 The Lords Arms: Knighthood, War and Play 2 The Lords Hall: feasting, Family and Fashion 3 The Lords Church: Monument, Sermon and Memory 4 The Lords Lands: Men, Women and Machines 5 The Lords Folk: Masks, Mummers and Monsters 6 The Lords Enemies: Saracens, Scotsmen and the Biped Beast 7 The Lords Illuminators: Six Hands and a Face References List of Illustrations Index. The Luttrell Psalter is one of the British Library's greatest treasures. It is an illuminated manuscript that was commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (1276-1345), a wealthy landowner who lived at Irnham, Lincolnshire. Planned and made over a number of years between 1330 and 1345, it was created by several artists who probably all joined the Luttrell household for the duration of their work. As a result of their close connection with the patron's family and everyone else alongside whom they lived, it is one of the most personalised manuscripts, providing a unique glimpse of medieval life. Famous for its long series of scenes of life in rural England, with incredibly detailed depictions people at work and play, other pages often reveal an illuminator with a lively imagination and marvellous sense of colour. Very few people before now have had the opportunity to turn and admire these 624 wonderful pages. This full-sized facsimile edition gives everyone the chance to do so. As a helpful aid to the reader, the volume also contains a scholarly commentary by Michelle Brown which tells the story of the manuscript in great detail and includes a folio-by-folio description. In den WarenkorbFolio (350 x 240 mm), 688pp., 624 illustrations, orig. cloth, spine slightly shaken, d.w. a very good copy. The Luttrell Psalter is one of the British Library's supreme treasures. It has more than 600 pages and the delicate task of recreating this masterpiece of English medieval art so accurately into a complete full size facsimile edition has taken well over a year to achieve. Every stage of the production process has been subjected to the greatest attention to detail, from reproducing the subtle effect of fine worked gold and silver that decorate the pages of the manuscript, to finding a modern paper which matches the weight and feel of the original animal skin vellum pages. This is a huge book in every sense: it measures over 7 cm in depth (and 36 cm long by 24.5 cm wide), and weighs just over 5 kilos. The volume also contains a 64-page scholarly commentary by leading medieval manuscripts expert Michelle P. Brown, which details the history of the manuscript and includes a folio-by-folio description.
