Running between 1709 and 1711, 'The Tatler' was a British literary and society journal begun by Richard Steele, with significant contributions from Joseph Addison. It was written under the pseudonym 'Isaac Bickerstaff'.The running titles reflect that this was first published under the title 'The Tatler'.It represented a new approach to journalism, featuring cultivated essays on contemporary matters, and established the pattern that would be copied in such works as Addison and Steele's The Spectator, and Samuel Johnson's The Rambler and The Idler.A complete four volume edition, with volume I published in 1723 (ESTC T1239), and volumes II-IV in 1737 (ESTC N19109).With an index to the rear of each volume.With former owner's inscriptions dated 1775 to head of volume II-IV title pages, with further crossed out ink markings.
