Paperback. Zustand: Good. ?A marvelously thoughtful book . . . It is not just about emigrants and refugees. It is about us all.? ?The New York Times When her parents brought her from the war-ravaged, faded elegance of her native Cracow in 1959 to settle in well-manicured, suburban Vancouver, Eva Hoffman was thirteen years old. Entering into adolescence, she endured the painful pull of nostalgia and struggled to express herself in a strange unyielding new language. Her spiritual and intellectual odyssey continued in college and led her ultimately to New York?s literary world yet still she felt caught between two languages, two cultures. But her perspective also made her a keen observer of an America in the flux of change. A classically American chronicle of upward mobility and assimilation. Lost in Translation is also an incisive meditation on coming to terms with one?s own uniqueness, on learning how deeply culture affects the mind and body, and finally, on what it means to accomplish a translation of one?s self.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. From the author of Eating the Sun, an artistic collection of more than 50 drawings featuring unique, funny, and poignant foreign words that have no direct translation into English Did you know that the Japanese language has a word to express the way sunlight filters through the leaves of trees? Or that there's a Finnish word for the distance a reindeer can travel before needing to rest? Lost in Translation brings to life more than fifty words that don't have direct English translations with charming illustrations of their tender, poignant, and humorous definitions. Often these words provide insight into the cultures they come from, such as the Brazilian Portuguese word for running your fingers through a lover's hair, the Italian word for being moved to tears by a story, or the Swedish word for a third cup of coffee. In this clever and beautifully rendered exploration of the subtleties of communication, you'll find new ways to express yourself while getting lost in the artistry of imperfect translation.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Lost in Translation - The Book of Revelation: Two Brides, Two Destinies is a worthy follow-up to its predecessors, Rediscovering the Hebrew Roots of Our Faith and The Book of Revelation through Hebrew Eyes. This is the final in a three-volume series that covers the entire book of Revelation in awe-inspiring detail, expounding and expanding on familiar verses in God's Word that have been misunderstood and misconstrued for many years. Or, in some cases, linking together verses and concepts that have been repeatedly overlooked. In this volume the authors explore the second half of Revelation from the perspective they established so clearly in Volumes 1 and 2 - that of a Hebrew God speaking through a Hebrew believer to an audience that was intimately familiar with the Hebrew language, culture, customs, and concepts that form both the literal and the metaphorical foundation for vast portions of Revelation. In the process they answer a multitude of important questions, including the following: Whose Bride are you? Can you change sides or are you stuck forever in a relationship you really don't want? What is the ancient framework by which you can identify most of the players? Who or what is the False Messiah? Who or what is the False Prophet? What is the Second Death? Who will experience it? How does it differ from any other death? These are just some of the questions to which you'll find plausible, sensible, biblically sound answers in this volume. Please join us, right now, for another voyage of discovery unlike anything you've embarked on before, even if you've already read the first two volumes About the Authors: Collectively, John Klein and Adam Spears have studied the Scriptures for more than sixty years. Together they have also taught countless hours of biblical courses, on Hebrew foundations, that bring alive the Holy Scriptures. Their motto, If you don't know covenant you can't know Scripture identifies one of the primary concepts that these two long-term scholars believe underlies the entire Bible, from the first verse in Genesis to the last verse of Revelation. Both authors spend their time studying, writing, teaching, and counseling on full-time schedules. In addition, John is associate leader for House of Covenant, a Messianic congregation in Bend, Oregon, while Adam serves as the congregational leader. Michael Christopher is a writer/editor and a long-term veteran of the publishing industry. He has worked with dozens of authors, both famous and unknown, to produce religious and secular books of many different kinds. But he has never enjoyed any book project as much as this three-volume series, nor has he ever learned as much in the process.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. A novel of searing intelligence and startling originality, Lost in Translation heralds the debut of a unique new voice on the literary landscape. Nicole Mones creates an unforgettable story of love and desire, of family ties and human conflict, and of one woman's struggle to lose herself in a foreign land--only to discover her home, her heart, herself. At dawn in Beijing, Alice Mannegan pedals a bicycle through the deserted streets. An American by birth, a translator by profession, she spends her nights in Beijing's smoke-filled bars, and the Chinese men she so desires never misunderstand her intentions. All around her rushes the air of China, the scent of history and change, of a world where she has come to escape her father's love and her own pain. It is a world in which, each night as she slips from her hotel, she hopes to lose herself forever. For Alice, it began with a phone call from an American archaeologist seeking a translator. And it ended in an intoxicating journey of the heart--one that would plunge her into a nation's past, and into some of the most rarely glimpsed regions of China. Hired by an archaeologist searching for the bones of Peking Man, Alice joins an expedition that penetrates a vast, uncharted land and brings Professor Lin Shiyang into her life. As they draw closer to unearthing the secret of Peking Man, as the group's every move is followed, their every whisper recorded, Alice and Lin find shelter in each other, slowly putting to rest the ghosts of their pasts. What happens between them becomes one of the most breathtakingly erotic love stories in recent fiction. Indeed, Lost in Translation is a novel about love--between a nation and its past, between a man and a memory, between a father and a daughter. Its powerful impact confirms the extraordinary gifts of a master storyteller, Nicole Mones.…

In your room you will find a minibar which is filled with alcoholics. Do not throw urine around. Have you ever been to a restaurant and wondered what on earth to order? Bored Meat Stew Lorry Driver Soup Kiss Lorraine. Have you ever arrived in an airport and found that the supposedly helpful signs just make you feel more lost? You are required to declare all sorts of private things. Departure. Bus stop. Car rectal. Please buy your ticket consciously. Charlie Croker has, and in 2006 he gathered together what he thought was the definitive collection of English language howlers for his bestselling book "Lost in Translation". But he reckoned without the great British public. Not only was the book a smash hit, it also opened the floodgates to a deluge of emails and letters stuffed full of further mistranslations and mutilated phrases. From a leaflet from the Museum of Rasputin in Russia (which is apparently situated in a house that belonged a pilot fish Zubov) to a song title on a pirated Pink Floyd CD (Come Fartably Numb), the scrambled sentences just kept flooding in. At the same time, Charlie has continued his travels and picked up gems of his own. With such a wealth of material, a sequel wasn't just a necessity, it was a public service, and "Still Lost in Translation" is even more addictive, whimsical and side-splittingly hilarious than the first book. Illus. By Sandra Howgate (illustrator).…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In this book, Gerald O'Collins, SJ, takes a systematic look at the 2010 English translation of the Roman Missal and the ways it fails to achieve what the Second Vatican Council mandated: the full participation of priest and people. Critiquing the unsatisfactory principles prescribed by the Vatican instruction Liturgiam Authenticam (2001), this book, which includes a chapter by John Wilkins:tells the story of the maneuverings that sidelined the 1998 translation approved by eleven conferences of English-speaking bishops, criticizes the 2010 translation, andillustrates the clear superiority of the 1998 translation, the "Missal that never was".…

Zustand: Good. In September 1962, when Martin Dockery landed in Saigon, he was a young, determined, idealistic U.S. Army first lieutenant convinced of America's imminent victory in Vietnam. While most of the twelve thousand U.S. military advisors in-country at the time filled support positions in Saigon and other major cities, Dockery was one of a handful of advisors assigned to Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) combat units. For eight months Dockery lived and fought in the heart of the Mekong Delta with an ARVN infantry battalion on missions and operations that often lasted several days. And for most of that time, whether tramping through the steaming, leech-infested jungle, hiking across canals, or engaging in sudden firefights, Dockery was the only American soldier with the unit. Dockery's solitary assignment with ARVN during the infancy of U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia afforded him an understanding of Vietnam far more profound than most other Americans. Lost in Translation is his riveting account of the largely overlooked role of American combat advisors in the war. As he vividly evokes the sounds, smells, and vistas of the country and its people, Dockery depicts an army poorly trained, incompetent, and unwilling to fight for a government every bit as corrupt as that of the French colonial empire it replaced. Yet even worse than his daily fare of isolation, frustration, and danger was Dockery's growing conviction that the advisory program was doomed. Though these dedicated, highly motivated advisors would do their best and persevere under the most trying circumstances, they would not succeed. The author's eyewitness testimony provides inescapable evidence that as early as 1962 the writing was already on the wall concerning the outcome of the Vietnam War. Although it would take U.S. leaders more than a decade to divine what the young officer learned in a single year, Dockery's personal and penetrating analysis of the war--which he presented in a lecture at a Special Forces facility in Germany one week after his tour in Vietnam ended--proved chillingly accurate. Those who send soldiers to war should consider the realities and truths within these pages. From the Hardcover edition.…
