Paperback. Zustand: Good. Born just after World War I, Judith Fisher had a seemingly normal childhood, but beneath the veneer of middle-class normalcy, her mother battled depression, migraines, and addiction to prescription pain relievers. By the time Judith was ten, her mom had suffered three nervous breakdowns and had had a number of electroshock treatments. In an attempt to gain control over her own troubled life, she maintained strict control over her daughter's every action, forging a bond that was highly manipulative and, at the same time, loving. By age fourteen, young Judith had absorbed all the stresses of a dysfunctional family life and was desperate for a way out. She attempted suicide, but survived. A year later, she departed for a New England boarding school, a welcome relief from her troubled home, and a hope for recovery. In her senior year, however, through a series of misfortunes and betrayals, Judith's parents had her incarcerated in a mental hospital for seven months; there she was subjected to twenty-seven electroshock treatments and an attempted rape. Somehow, she lived through these appalling abuses and managed to escape being locked up permanently.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. AWARD-WINNING Finalist in the Fiction: MULTICULTURAL category of the 2019 Best Book Awards by American Book Fest. When Nila comes to America, she ventures to this strange land on a dependent visa, a wife in an arranged marriage she had no control over. Now faceless in a lonely world, she drifts amongst the clouds and people, learning a culture she never expected while desperately trying to hold on to her own. There is sorrow and joy, adventure, and loss, but above all, there is love.Written from the heart and mind of the displaced, Nila's story explores what it means to be a voyager through the unknown, an immigrant in a land of immigrants, each vying for a place and a home. It speaks to a connection while baring the soul of the global society we have created. Culture, assimilation, love, and pain all come together in a lyrical wonder that will make you cry, warm your heart, and stir your soul. one that will stay with you long after the final page is closed. Who is Nila?If you are wondering who Nila is or who she is to me, I have no simple answer. I met herthrough the lines scribbled on a journal left on a park bench one summer afternoon. Did sheleave it on purpose for me to find? I'll never know. maybe it was fate, that it is destined forsomething beyond what she could handle. In my journey through those immersing pages, I wandered through her mind which neverseemed to rest. I traveled wherever it took me. I learned a lot about her, in fact, perhaps morethan anyone who knew her and maybe even more than she knew herself. Some of those pages carried the scent of jasmine and roses. When I closed my eyes, I could smell the same flower she breathed and felt them blooming all around me. Some of the words she wrote were blurred. Circles of tears had made tiny dents in the paper. I tried to be like her, to see the faces she saw, to listen to the voices she heard. Some pages never wanted to be turned and I would stare at them for hours before I could move on. Along with her childhood memories, Nila had kept a dry banyan tree leaf, and a tiny piece of a peacock feather. She would dream and wish that the feather would split into two and then keep multiplying. The beauty becoming a part of her.Nila is not just a sari-cladded faceless girl from South Asia. She is beyond any definitionof anything that divides us. She is one amongst us and could even be a part of us all. Oncewe know her, she cannot be separated from us. Let's give her a face. a face we loveand use it to replace the fences we have created between us.Life in a Faceless World is a New Age Literary Fiction that is Enlightening, Uplifting, Motivational and Inspirational Readers can also discover the secret to Happiness, and realize Personal Transformation through Self-Improvement and Positive Thinking.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. From the New York Times bestselling author of How to Be a Bawse comes an "insightful and charmingly funny" (Rupi Kaur) primer on learning to come home to your truest and happiest self. "I love Lilly's honest and helpful advice about achieving happiness."--Mindy Kaling, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Why Not Me? "It's time to flip right side up. It's time for this book title to make sense. It's time to be a triangle." Everyone--even world-famous actress, author, and creator Lilly Singh--knows that sometimes life just sucks. In this book, Singh provides a safe space where readers can learn how to create a sense of peace within themselves. Without sugarcoating what it's like to face adversity--including acknowledging her own intensely personal struggles with identity, success, and self-doubt--Singh teaches readers to "unsubscribe" from cookie-cutter ideals. With her signature blend of vulnerability, insight, and humor, Singh instructs readers to "be a triangle," creating a solid foundation for your life, one that can be built upon, but never fundamentally changed or destroyed. As she puts it, we must always find a way to come home to ourselves: "we must create a place, a system of beliefs, a simple set of priorities to come back to should life lead us astray, which it definitely will." Like a wise, empathetic friend who always keeps you honest, Singh pushes you to adjust your mindset and change your internal dialogue. The result is a deeply humane, entertaining, and uplifting guide to befriending yourself and becoming a true "miracle for the world.".…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. ?A marvelously thoughtful book . . . It is not just about emigrants and refugees. It is about us all.? ?The New York Times When her parents brought her from the war-ravaged, faded elegance of her native Cracow in 1959 to settle in well-manicured, suburban Vancouver, Eva Hoffman was thirteen years old. Entering into adolescence, she endured the painful pull of nostalgia and struggled to express herself in a strange unyielding new language. Her spiritual and intellectual odyssey continued in college and led her ultimately to New York?s literary world yet still she felt caught between two languages, two cultures. But her perspective also made her a keen observer of an America in the flux of change. A classically American chronicle of upward mobility and assimilation. Lost in Translation is also an incisive meditation on coming to terms with one?s own uniqueness, on learning how deeply culture affects the mind and body, and finally, on what it means to accomplish a translation of one?s self.…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. After two decades, Washington Post journalist Blaine Harden returned to his small-town birthplace in the Pacific Northwest to follow the rise and fall of the West?s most thoroughly conquered river. To explore the Columbia River and befriend those who collaborated in its destruction, he traveled on a monstrous freight barge sailing west from Idaho to the Grand Coulee Dam, the site of the river?s harnessing for the sake of jobs, electricity, and irrigation. A River Lost is a searing personal narrative of rediscovery joined with a narrative of exploitation: of Native Americans, of endangered salmon, of nuclear waste, and of a once-wild river. Updated throughout, this edition features a new foreword and afterword.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Lost Childhood is the vivid, first-hand account of the horrors of war through the eyes of a child. This real-life memoir breaks a 60-year silence to tell one woman's riveting story of prisoner life during World War II. As a little Dutch girl in Indonesia, Annelex Hofstra's comfortable world was torn apart when she and her family were sent to Japanese prison camps for three and a half years. The story begins in 1942 when four-year-old Annelex is living on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Her grandfather is a successful planter, and her father is a pilot instructor in the Royal Netherlands Navy. But her carefree childhood ends as the Japanese invade Java, and along with 10,000 other Dutch residents, Annelex''s family is rounded up. With few belongings, they are shipped off to interment camps, to a helpless, unknown future. In a shockingly honest narrative, we learn of the tactics used by their captors to dehumanize the Dutch prisoners. We learn of the grinding daily routine of the prisoners, the food rations, the sleeping arrangements, and the awful sanitary conditions. We share in Annelex's near-death bout with malaria. We also share some of the awful things she witnessed--extracting parasitic worms from a fellow-prisoner's throat; the agonizing death by starvation of women punished for stealing food; and the sight of bodies being piled high on a truck. Eventually the hell ends and the family is liberated. But the girl's personal hell plagues her in freedom. Just days after she is reunited with her father, he is killed in an explosion. World war is replaced by civil war in Indonesia, forcing the family to flee first to Holland and then to the U.S., where the family tries to mend their broken lives. For 60 years Annelex Hofstra Layson has repressed her early memories, shielding even her husband and children from the horrors of her past. With Lost Childhood, her harrowing ordeal is finally revealed. The author shares her story now to provide hope in young lives torn apart by war, and to inspire future generations to work for peace.…

Zustand: Good. Who in his right mind wants to talk to a shrink? I don't want to talk about anything. I don't want to feel anything, taste anything . or anything. The lyrics "just dying to die" run around in my brain day and night. Fifteen-year-old Sam is in pain. He comes to the therapist's office unwillingly, angry, depressed, and filled with guilt over his own self-destructive behavior. He is being drawn deeper and deeper into a black hole of despair from which he sees no way out. The Road Back This is the Real-life story of Sam's Recovery, told from tapes of his therapy sessions. It tells what drove him to leave home, how he survived on the street, and why he was desperate to escape from the brutality of the gang that had become his "family" and from the torment of his own self-loathing. Zustand: Fair. For every teen who has experienced the pain and loneliness of a no-way-out darkness, and for all those who love them, here is the light that can lead the way back.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. What would it be like to sit down for an impassioned, entertaining conversation with Hillary Clinton? In Something Lost, Something Gained, Hillary offers her candid views of love, politics, liberty, democracy, leadership, the threats we face, and the future within our reach. Now with a new afterword! In Something Lost, Something Gained, former First Lady Hillary Clinton describes the strength she draws from her deepest friendships, her Methodist faith, and the nearly fifty years she's been married to President Bill Clinton--all with the wisdom that comes from looking back on a full life with fresh eyes. She takes us along as she returns to the classroom as a college professor, enjoys the bonds inside the exclusive club of former First Ladies, moves past her dream of being president, and dives into new activism for women and democracy. From canoeing with an ex-Nazi trying to deprogram white supremacists to sweltering with salt farmers in the desert trying to adapt to the climate crisis in India, Hillary brings us to the front lines of our biggest challenges. For the first time, Hillary shares the story of her operation to evacuate Afghan women to safety in the harrowing final days of America's longest war. But we also meet the brave women dissidents defying dictators around the world, gain new personal insights about her old adversary Vladimir Putin, and learn the best ways that worried parents can protect kids from toxic technology. We also hear her fervent and persuasive warning to all American voters. In the end, Something Lost, Something Gained is a testament to the idea that the personal is political, and the political is personal, providing a blueprint for what each of us can do to make our lives better. Hillary has "looked at life from both sides now." In these pages, she shares the latest chapter of her inspiring life and shows us how to age with grace and keep moving forward, with grit, joy, purpose, and a sense of humor. …
