Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The ''Works of Dionysius Longinus on the Sublime'' is a treatise concerning the art of writing and the qualities that make writing truly great. Written by Dionysius Longinus, a Greek writer and literary critic of the 1st century AD, this book is an exploration of the concept of ''the sublime'' in literature. Longinus argues that great writing must possess certain qualities, such as passion, emotion, and grandeur, in order to truly move and inspire readers. He also discusses the importance of language and style, and provides examples of great writing from ancient Greek and Roman literature. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the art of writing, literary criticism, or ancient Greek literature.1712. It must be a very unpleasing reflection to anyone who has a just and critical taste of the writings of the ancients to consider how many noble and useful works have been swallowed up in the ocean of time. Of what important value several of them were is to be collected from the character which contemporary authors and others have given to them, a circumstance that serves only to aggravate our pain for their loss. Of all the labors which have suffered or totally perished in this wreck, there are few deserving of more regret than those various tracts of Longinus. Written in Old English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

leather_bound. 192 [XIV] pages. 19 1/2 x 12 cm. [A4,a4, B -O8] CHEL. Vol. IX, p.188. "Leonard Welsted, a Westminster and Cambridge man, wrote a good deal of verse and , indeed, hardly deserved, though he had provoked it, his place in the "inferno" of THE DUNCAID even as a versifier [earned him Pope's satire, condemnation and lasting enmity]. But his translation of Longinus does not show any mark of dullness, while the original remarks connected with it show that, if he could not exactly produce poetry, he could appreciate it in Spenser and Shakespeare to a degree not common in his day." Early, faint owner inscription on title, text fresh and clean except for light stains, mostly marginal last few leaves -- O1-O8, raised bands, spine label. Contemporary full brown calf. Near fine.
