Hardcover remains solid and clean with light toning to the pages and minor shelf wear to the cloth. Binding firm. Signed and dated on the front free endpaper ("Eric Goranson, Aug. 13, 1962"). The original dust jacket is present but worn, with chipping and loss along the top edge, tearing at the spine ends. The striking Paul Bacon jacket design remains intact. The Long Winter is an early Cold War speculative novel by British writer John Christopher (pseudonym of Samuel Youd), published by Simon and Schuster in 1962. The novel imagines the onset of a new Ice Age that reverses global power structures, forcing Europeans to migrate southward and confronting them with a reversal of colonial hierarchies. Blending science-fiction catastrophe with social commentary, the work anticipates later climate-disaster fiction and remains an interesting example of early 1960s speculative literature addressing race, empire, and geopolitical change. First printings with the original dust jacket are increasingly scarce.
