Zustand: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A good condition original 1900 printing. An ex-library copy rebound into green quarter leather boards and with the usual number of stamps. Textblock edges have been decoratively speckled and are tidily aligned. The contents show a typical mild tan and a few signs of dusty prints and handling but this is a very well-kept copy for it's age, with a firm binding and crisp and unfaded print. The fold-outs show a little age but are sound and intact. A sturdy and reliable book.

Erstausgabe
First Canadian edition, first printing, cloth issue, of Churchill's account of his experiences as a war correspondent in the Second Boer War. This copy is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. "The volume essentially consists of 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It is, as Churchill said in his Introductory Note, 'mainly a personal record of my adventures and impressions during the first five months of the African War. It may also be found to give a tolerably coherent account of the operations conducted by Sir Redvers Buller for the Relief of Ladysmith" (Cohen). A major component is Churchill's internment in a prisoner-of-war camp and his daring escape, which enthralled readers at the time and helped to cement his reputation as a man of action and character. The Canadian edition was issued from the plates of the US edition, both published in June 1900, following the British edition in May. The Canadian is "the scarcest by far of the three first editions" (Langworth, p. 56). It was also issued in wrappers, though almost never surviving in that format. Provenance: Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers. Cohen A4.3.a. Richard Langworth, A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill, 1998. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in red and black, front cover lettered in red and black with black line-drawing of armoured train. With 3 folding maps including frontispiece, plans in text. Light spotting to cloth and edges. A near-fine copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition published by Longmans, Green and Co in 1900. This is a very good copy. The boards have light marks. There is a scratch about 3 inches long on the back board. There are three pin holes on the spine. The spine has cracked on the inside board however the book is well bound. There is a previous owners name on the front free end paper. There is the odd foxing mark throughout the book with moderate foxing to the first couple of pages. Overall a very good copy and complete with all fold out maps. A very good copy of this first edition. This is Churchill's account of his time served in the second Boer war including his capture and unlikely escape from a prison camp. His recollections were first published in The Morning Post and then collectively in book form here. [Woods A4] .

FirstÂedition of Churchillâ s fourth book and personal record of his impressions during the first five months of the Second Boer War. Octavo, in original cloth, with three folding maps (one printed in color). In very good condition. When the Boer settlers in South Africa rebelled against British authority, Churchill joined with the 21st Lancers and "secured an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Postâ ¦ He had scarcely arrived [in South Africa] before he was involved in a skirmish which found him 'in durance vile': a prisoner of war in Pretoria, unable to talk himself out of prison by claiming to be a reporter, and nearly mad over the lack of action. Typically, he made a daring escapeâ ¦ The true-life adventure story of his successful escapade dominates this book, one of the most gripping in the canon, making this one of his most popular books" (Langworth).
