(Verlagstext) Alexei Iwanowitsch Kostrikin (* 12. Februar 1929 in Bolschoi Morez, Oblast Wolgograd; gestorben 22. September 2000 in Moskau) war ein russischer Mathematiker, der sich mit Algebra befasste. Kostrikin stammte aus einer Bauernfamilie, besuchte ab 1947 die Staatliche Universität Saratow und ab 1951 aufgrund seiner herausragenden Leistungen die Lomonossow-Universität, wo er 1952 seinen Abschluss machte. Er wurde Student von Igor Schafarewitsch, bei dem er 1956 am Steklow-Institut promoviert wurde (Kandidat der Wissenschaften). Er blieb am Steklow-Institut und wurde außerdem 1963 Professor an der Lomonossow-Universität in der Abteilung Höhere Algebra, die er 1977 bis 2000 leitete. Er schrieb mehrere bekannte Algebra-Lehrbücher und befasste sich in den 1950er Jahren mit dem eingeschränkten Burnside-Problem, wo ihm ein mathematischer Durchbruch und eine Teillösung für prime Exponenten gelang. Vollständig gelöst wurde es 1989 durch Efim Zelmanov. In den 1960er Jahren studierte er Liealgebren über Körpern endlicher Charakteristik und formulierte hier Vermutungen mit Schafarewitsch. 1968 erhielt er den Staatspreis der UdSSR und 1997 den Lomonossowpreis. 1976 wurde er korrespondierendes Mitglied der Sowjetischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Er war Invited Speaker auf dem Internationalen Mathematikerkongress in Stockholm 1962 (Lie-Algebren und Endliche Gruppen, russisch) und 1970 in Nizza (Variations modulaires sur un thème de Cartan). Yuri Manin (* 16. Februar 1937 in Simferopol, ASSR der Krim, Russische SFSR, Sowjetunion; gestorben 7. Januar 2023) war ein sowjetischer, dann russisch-deutscher Mathematiker und wissenschaftliches Mitglied und Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Bonn. Seine Hauptarbeitsgebiete waren Zahlentheorie, Diophantische Geometrie, mathematische Physik und algebraische Geometrie. In den 1960er Jahren bewies er die Mordell-Vermutung für Funktionenkörper. Er schrieb ein Buch über kubische Flächen und Formen ("Cubic Forms"), untersuchte algebraische Flächen über den rationalen Zahlen (z. B. Fano-Varietäten) und zeigte die Rolle der Brauergruppe im Zusammenhang mit Abweichungen von Helmut Hasses Lokal-Global-Prinzip auf. Er arbeitete auch über Modulformen in der Zahlentheorie (p-adische Modulformen) und über die Torsionspunkte elliptischer Kurven. Mit Wassili Alexejewitsch Iskowskich bewies er 1971 am Beispiel glatter quartischer 3-Varietäten (Beispielen von Fano-Varietäten), dass unirationale Varietäten in drei Dimensionen nicht rational sein müssen (ein Gegenbeispiel zum Lüroth-Problem von Jacob Lüroth). Graeub wurde 1949 an der Universität Heidelberg mit der Dissertation Die semilinearen Abbildungen promoviert. Er lehrte als Privatdozent an der Universität Zürich. 1960 ging er in die USA und 1962 an die University of Toronto. Seit dieser Zeit wählte er für seinen Namen die Schreibweise Greub. Greub schrieb eine Monografie über Lineare Algebra in den Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften und ein dreibändiges Lehrbuch über Differentialgeometrie mit Ray Vanstone und Stephen Halperin, entstanden über mehrere Jahrzehnte und ursprünglich ein Buchprojekt von Greub mit H.
