In den WarenkorbPeking 1971, Foreign Language Press. Stiff pictorial wrs., very good, 25.7 x 23.5 cm., English language text, profuse color & b.w. photos, showing how P.L.A. medical staff assist the common people. * R A R E FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING * . *** **** *** . . ADDRESSING HOW THE P.L.A. 'BAREFOOT DOCTORS" HELP . . .MINORITY & COMMO…N-FOLK IN RURAL AREAS TO GET MEDICAL HELP . . . WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF MAO SLOGANS & TIDBITS OF WISDOM . * After the "CULTURAL REVOLUTION" ended somewhere around 1969 or so, the "Red Guards" divided into two separate groups. One continued to be unauthorized "Revolutionaries" going against Mao. The other group became workers in behalf of China's poor masses. Some joined the newly formed "Barefoot Doctors" and spread out in China's rural areas, dealing with peasants and their medical issues. . For the most part, P.L.A. [People's Liberation Army] members were educated as "Barefoot Doctors" and sent in their thousands to the rural and isolated parts of China, to administer and treat impoverished minority and other poor peasants. These doctors pass along the Mao philosophy and indoctrinated these people into the "Cult of Mao" as well as providing very basic medical attention as well as giving out Mao books and botanical books identifying Zhongyi or traditional medical medicinal plants. This enriched the peasantry and helped them to find ways to treat common illnesses with local herbs and medicinal plants. . * This work while not specifically stating that the medical members of the "Barefoot Doctors" were redirected "Red Guards" it is true that a good number did become "Barefoot Doctors" and did good for the common people of China. This idealistic group changed their political attitude, continued to wear their olive green army uniforms, wore the "Mao" hat and red star and carried various titles of "Red Books" with the sayings of Chairman Mao, the "Great Helmsman." The continued to wear Mao badges and performed a new role in society building up medical coverage rather than destroying old culture. . * The current books is an excellent example of this new "direction" of the "Red Guards" documenting their new course since 1968 with publication date of 1971, within the period of "transition" from "Red Guards" to "Barefoot Doctors" . * This work documents the new course based on Mao's words: "Heal the wounded, rescue the dying, practice revolutionary humanitarianism" and also Mao's "These battalions of ours are wholly dedicated to the liberation of the people and work entirely in the people's interests" found in the introduction pages of this work. . * Nicely illustrated with excellent photos of the new "Barefoot Doctors" who look identical to the "Red Guards" but without the "Red Guard" arm band, but still holding Chairman Mao's "Little Red Book," and wearing Mao badges, wearing "Mao" hats with the red star. They carry medical boxes on their shoulders with a red cross on each. Some photos show people still wearing "Red Guard Armbands [Bizhang] see p.98, 109 & 113. . * LIU Shao-chi: Is demonized on several pages due to his lack of attention of medical assistance to poor and rural people. With several comments criticizing Liu Shao-chi as a "renegade, hidden traitor and scab." see pages 30, 43, 44, 81 et al. . With several pages devoted to assistance of deaf-mutes, see pages 98 & 107. . *** LIN Biao slogan on p.37. . *** SELDOM FOUND: This is an obscure FIRST & ONLY small edition. Written during the WENHUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION], and directed to the English-speaking countries of the world. An effort to show how during the Cultural Revolution, things improved for the common peasant and impoverished masses in rural China. . *** CONDITION: Bound in the original color pictorial stiff wrappers, minor scuff to front covers, solidly bound, firm, clean contents, no issues. Profusely illustrated in color & black & white photos. . *** REFERENCES: Liu Shao-chi: See us for works by/about him and his conflict with Mao. Wikipedia..
