Sie ist besonders bekannt für ihre Kinderbücher um Miss Bianca, eine abenteuerlustige Mäuse-Dame. Ihren ersten Roman, Rhododendron Pie, veröffentlichte sie im Jahr 1930. In ihrer langen Karriere schrieb sie 26 Romane für Erwachsene, zahlreiche Erzählungen, einige Bühnenstücke und 14 Kinderbücher. Viele ihrer Werke erwiesen sich als internationale Bestseller, fast alle wurden auch ins Deutsche übersetzt. Einige ihrer Werke dienten auch als Vorlagen für Filme. So verfilmte Ernst Lubitsch Das Mädchen Cluny Brown (Cluny Brown, 1944) im Jahr 1946 unter dem Titel Cluny Brown auf Freiersfüßen. Am bekanntesten ist wohl der Walt-Disney-Zeichentrickfilm Bernard und Bianca ? Die Mäusepolizei (1977), der auf Bianca und ihre Freunde (The Rescuers, 1959) basierte.
