Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Ex Libris plate to front pastedown. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Moderate crushing to spine ends, with splitting, fraying and loss to the head, tail and joints. Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate tanning to spine.

The author provides a preface to the first and second editions within this work, detailing the changes he made and the further thought he had given the subject. Mahan details the highs and lows experienced throughout Nelson's life, including the plans for defending London in 1801. The work contains 12 illustrations and 21 maps and battle plans. Two folding plates. Collated complete.Ink inscriptions to front endpaper, dated 1899 and 1928. In original publishers cloth binding. Externally sound with slight rubbing, particularly to the extremities. Bright cloth with a gleaming gold gilt boat scene on front board. Marks to boards, causing loss of colour on cloth, particularly on front board. Slight bumping to extremities. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Age toning and offsetting on endpapers. Ink inscriptions to front endpaper, dated 1899 and 1928. Slight spotting to endpapers. Internally generally firmly bound. Paper generally bright and clean, with the occasional light tidemark to gutter. Good. book.
