Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 2 volume set in 19th century bindings. Three quarters leather with marbled paper over boards. Front cover of the first volume is nearly detached. 572 pages. Engraved title page and portrait of Cervantes. Folding map present and in good condition opposite page xxiv. 6 additional plates. Volume 2 has been rebacked with the original leather laid down over the repair. Book opens very stiffly now. It clearly hasn't been read (or even much opened) since the repair was done. 623 pages. Engraved title page and 8 additional plages. Text blocks good and tight. Page edges good a square. Some foxing to the plates and a few of the pages. This is considered to be the first good translation of the work. Previous owner's name and address (California, 1917) on blank page added at the front when this binding was put on. Illustrated edition of 'Don Quixote' translated by the Irish author and translator, Charles Jervas. The translator's name was famously misprinted as 'Jarvis', meaning his translation of the classic story, which was still being printed over 200 years after the initial publication, is still referred to as the 'Jarvis edition'. Twenty illustrations including portrait frontispiece and a folding map. Missing one leaf in Volume I which contained the direction to the printer for the placement of the prints, missing one illustration; cxlvi, 372; x, 412; xvi, 392; xi, 440 [viii], 7 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. Bound in half red leather with marbled-papered-covered boards, marbled-paper endpapers. Octavo. Wear to leather particularly at hinges, slight splitting at top, corners bumped, wear to boards, occasional tears to some margins, not affecting text, lightly foxed, former owner's signature in neat blue ink to ffeps, a couple of marks to pages but generally clean and bright with clear text, bindings firm and square.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2 volume set (complete) in slipcase. Both volumes in matching three quarters leather bindings (green leather with green cloth) by Riviere & Sons. Housed in a green boards slipcase. Books are in very good condition. Spines are faded two tones towards brown (from original green) from exposure to light. First signs of wear to the hinges showing now, but boards are all firmly attached. Top edge gilt. Bindings signed on verso of marbled endpapers. Pages clean and square, binding tight. Wide margins. Both volume have early 20th century bookplates tucked inside the front covers & rectangular smudges on the inside front covers where the paste has dried up and the bookplates have popped off. 572 pages and 623 pages. There are 7 plates in the first volume and 10 in the second (including frontis). A very attractive set of this early translation. The slipcase is the same green as the leather, but it is lightweight cardstock. Please email with questions or to request photos.

First edition of the Jervas translation. Two volumes. Contemporary mottled calf, five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, titles in gilt to the spine. Bound with: 'The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra. Written by Don Gregorio Mayáns and Sisár' (the first English translation 1738); 'A supplement to the translator's preface' more commonly know as 'A dissertation on the origin of books of chivalry' by William Warburton; 'Advertisment concerning the Prints' by John Oldfield. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 67 copper plates engraved by Gerard van der Gucht from drawings by John Vanderbank and an additional frontispiece engraved by George Virtue after a drawing by G. Kent. Decorative head and tail pieces and initial letters. The bindings are square and firm with minor surface wear to the boards and corners. The original spines laid down and refurbished at the joints and tips. The contents, with near paper strengthening to the inner hinge of volume I, light browning to the margins and a short closed tear to the fore-edge of one plate, are otherwise in good order throughout. An attractive example of the first edition of this esteemed translation. Jervas (1675-1739), consistently misspelled on editions of his translation as 'Jarvis', was a portrait painter and translator. "Jervas entered the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, setting up his home and studio in London in Cleveland Court, Westminster. He was hailed by Richard Steele in The Tatler of 16 April 1709 a 'the last great painter Italy has sent to us'. As well as literary friends, Jervas also had an influential patron in the prime minister Sir Robert Walpole. Jervas played an important role in acquiring works of art for Walpole's ever expanding collection, as well as contributing his own portraits. His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" ODNB.
