In den WarenkorbTwo works in one volume, 4to, pp. 34, [2] final blank; [iv], 38; without the final blank; a fine volume, in contemporary tree calf, spine finely gilt with morocco label. Second and first editions of two poems by Crabbe, attractively bound together: these were his third and fourth separately-published books. The Library had been his first success: when almost bankrupt in early 1781, he had written to Burke in desperation, and Burke had responded generously, although the two were complete strangers. Burke invited Crabbe to Beaconsfield to stay with him, introduced him to Johnson and other literary figures, and took the manuscript to Dodsley, who published it in July 1781. The poem sold out in ten weeks, and the second edition was planned although it cannot have been followed very quickly, as it is dated two years later. There were a number of revisions, most importantly in line 320, which Crabbe rewrote. The Village was completed by the end of 1782; in early 1783 Samuel Johnson read it, and contributed some couplets (lines 15-20 are said to be by him). His letter to Joshua Reynolds of 4 March 1783 praises the poem as 'original, vigorous, and elegant. I do not doubt of Mr. Crabbe's success'. Bareham & Gatrell, Bibliography of Crabbe, A4 and A5; Fleeman, Bibliography of Johnson, 83.5CV/1 (pp. 1562-3). Provenance. Early armorial bookplate of the Rev. Joseph Pickford, A.M. This is very probably Joseph (1772-1844), son of the architect, who became a fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, and then a clergyman near Derby.

Quarto, 36 pp. (with terminal blank); in modern half polished tan calf. First edition, scarce. The work was published for subscribers, apparently in an edition of around 250: books 'give new views to life, and teach us how to live'. Although he had published Inebrity in 1775, by the early 1780s Crabbe was living in destitution, reliant on the 'kindness of the wigmaker with whom he lodged' (CHEL). In desperation, he left some manuscript poems with Edmund Burke who was sufficiently impressed to oversee their publication. It was Burke who chose this as the first work to be published and it was an immediate success. . Title lightly foxed, but a very good copy.
