Fine Binding. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of William Hazlitt's strange and passionate memoir revealing his love for Sarah Walker, his landlord's daughter. The first edition of William Hazlitt's passionate account of his infatuation for his landlord's daughter, Sarah Walker. An uncommon volume. In the original publisher's variant binding in green drab boards, lacking the spine label. The textual differences are not explained.Hazlitt fell in love with Sarah at first sight, and that love turned into obsession very quickly, almost driving the author to madness. When Sarah started seeing other men, Hazlitt recorded his woeful tale in this volume in an attempt to find a cathartic outlet for his misery. It was published anonymously but quickly recognised as Hazlitt's work. This is a truthful memoir recalling the story of his turmoiled emotions, reflecting the intensity of his feelings with raw and at times odd and vulgar language. Illustrated with a vignette title page. In the original publisher's binding with green paper covered boards, lacking the spine label. Externally smart with some shelf wear and some minor spotting to the spine, which is slightly sunned. Internally, firmly bound. FIRST EDITION, with engraved title-page, ink with a greenish tint, with a vignette portrait of Sarah Walker after Hazlitt's drawing, some foxing, pp. [iv], 192, 8vo, uncut in the original pink boards, spine of drab paper, printed label partly defective, rubbed, and corners worn, sound. Keynes calls the pink boards the first binding: the label he calls for is longitudinal, but here we have the later issue label. 'In the end Hazlitt could only purge himself of the abortive affair by writing a book about it, Liber amoris ('Book of love'), published in May 1823. It consisted of dialogues between "W" and "S" written in a style of extreme sensibility, together with edited versions of Hazlitt's own letters to his friends about his feelings for Sarah. Emotionally raw, at times vulgar and embarrassing, Liber amoris played into the hands of his enemies in the right-wing press. Though published anonymously, it was quickly identified as Hazlitt's and he was made a laughing-stock for his infatuation with "the tailor's daughter"' (ODNB). (Keynes 67).

First Edition of this curious autobiographical work, detailing Hazlitt's strange infatuation with Sarah Walker, one of his landlord's daughters. Hazlitt, who had moved out of his wife's house, proposed to get a divorce in order to marry Miss Walker but she jilted him. He published this book anonymously to vent his anguish, but all those in his circle were aware of its authorship and it soon became public knowledge. In addition to Hazlitt's own account of his conversations with Miss Walker, the book contains confidential letters addressed to P.G.Patmore and J.S.Knowles regarding the ill-fated love affair.
