Hard Cover. Zustand: Poor. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. New Edition. First Printing. Publisher's full leather. This is a later edition (1786) of the collected letters of "Junius," first published in 1772. "Junius' poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, for a series of inconsistent measures which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies 'into excesses little short of rebellion.' Vehement, lucid, frequently reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, the letters were polemical masterpieces with such extraordinary knowledge and appreciation of contemporary colonial opinion that they lent moral support to the early revolutionary cause. 'Junius' opposed the Tea Duty, but upheld the legality of the Stamp Act, and prophesied (Dec. 19, 1769) that the colonies aimed at independence" - Dictionary of American History. . Upper board missing, spine cracked, some foxing. Reading/binding copy only. POOR. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 394 pp.

In den WarenkorbUniform matching hard back binding in nineteenth century half dark green leather with wide fold-ins, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and fourth, tooling to the others, dated at the foot, tea green cloth sides, all page edges gilt, pale blue and rose marble paper end sheets. 8vo. 8½'' x 5½''. Junius was the pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of political letters critical of the government of King George III to the Public Advertiser, from 21 January 1769 to 21 January 1772 as well as several other London newspapers such as the London Evening Post. The collection of private and open letters were from an anonymous polemicist (Junius) claimed by some to be Philip Francis, as well as other letters in-reply from people to whom Junius had written between 1769 and 1772. The collection was published in two volumes in 1772 by Henry Sampson Woodfall, the owner and editor of a London newspaper, the Public Advertiser. The collection includes 69 letters, 29 to the Printer of the Public Advertiser originally intended for public readership, with the remaining 40 to individuals, then made public. It included letters written by Philo Junius, who, some say, was Junius himself. Contains Engraved title pages (xl), 325; 366 pp with 15 full-page monochrome historical figure engravings. The engravings are without tissue papers and have left off-setting to the text block opposite, sun darkening of the leather down the spines. Interesting newspaper article from the 'Leeds Mercury' of April 24th 1901 concerning 'The Household of Junius'. Heavy two volume set weighing 2 kg, extra postage and insurance will be requested over and above our default setting for destinations outside of the UK. Member of the P.B.F.A. LITERATURE BEFORE 1800.
Leather. Zustand: Good. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Two full leather volumes, spines in six compartments separated by gilt borders and decoration, gilt lettering on red labels in one compartment. Junius is the pseudonym of the still unidentified author of a series of letters contributed to Henry Sampson Woodfall's Public Advertiser, a popular English newspaper of the day, between January 21, 1769, and January 21, 1772. Junius' aims were to discredit the ministries of the Duke of Grafton and subsequently of Lord North and to draw attention to the political influence of George III, who was trying to establish his own "personal government" by selecting his ministers from a group of subservient friends. Junius used ferocious sarcasm in attacking the public and private lives of Grafton and his associates, the Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Bute, and Lord Mansfield. Finally, in his 35th letter, he attacked King George himself, causing a storm of indignation and prompting the government in 1770 to (unsuccessfully) prosecute the printer, Woodfall, for seditious libel for having printed the letter. Junius' views were those of a radical Whig and an ardent supporter of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, who had been succeeded in office by Grafton in 1768. But Junius failed in his aims, for the ineffectual Grafton's fall in 1770 merely signaled the advent of Lord North's ministry. Apart from their significance as a literary controversy and their importance in the history of the freedom of the press, Junius' letters are notable for their style and the unsolved mystery of their authorship. They display little stylistic variety, and their tone hardly ever changes from that of sustained personal invective and of bitter, merciless sarcasm, but the writing has a fine boldness and liveliness, an urgency and blunt eloquence that still arrest the reader. Many attempts to discover Junius' identity have been made, including claims for Sir Philip Francis, the chief candidate; William Petty-Fitzmaurice, 2nd Earl of Shelburne (later 1st Marquess of Lansdowne); and Laughlin Macleane, who was Shelburne's undersecretary. Some 45 other candidates have been proposed less convincingly. Current opinion favors Sir Philip Francis. Expertly refurbished, former owner's name in an extremely elegent hand on each title page, library bookplates on each fep and a number written in the lower margin of the first text page of each volume (no other indications of library identification), corners bumped and worn, hinges strong, pages supple, both volumes appear unread. VERY GOOD. . Ex-Library. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. xxxiv, 227; 259, (37) pp.

In den WarenkorbAs John Cannon writes in Francis's entry in the Oxford DNB, 'The authorship of the Junius letters has been the subject of innumerable publications of various merit', with the case for Francis, first proposed by John Taylor in 1816, 'far the most probable'. The present item is of double interest: handwriting analysis has played a significant part in a number of publications, e.g. 'The handwriting of Junius professionally investigated by Charles Chabot, expert; with preface and collateral evidence, by the Hon. Edward Twisleton' (London, 1871). Hastings had spent much of the 1770s on the Supreme Council of Bengal, clashing (and fighting a duel with) Warren Hastings, and the subject of the letter is presumably Maurice's projected 'Indian Antiquities' (7 vols, 1793-1800). 1p, foolscap 8vo. On recto of first leaf of bifolium, franked in customary fashion on reverse of second leaf, with seal in red wax and four postmarks, 'Isleworth twenty fourth June / 1791 / Revd. Mr. Maurice / Woodford / Essex', with 'Free / P: Francis.' at bottom left. In fair condition, lightly aged, with 5cm vertical closed tear at head and traces of mount to blank area at head of reverse of second leaf. Folded for postage in the usual way. Signed 'P : Francis :'. He has 'taken up the three Receipts at Elmsly', and will endeavour to promote Maurice's subscription as far as he can. 'The historical part of Holwells Tracts I believe is Exact, & may be depended on. The rest is doubtful; - certainly beyond my Knowledge.' He has 'no Books that give any Account of the Raja of Berar', and suggests that Maurice consults 'a Tract of Mr. Orme's, called historical Fragments, printed for Nourse in 1782'. He ends by observing that 'Mr. Broughton Rouse has lately published a Treatise on the Tenure of landed Property in Bengal', which he believes Maurice 'would find very instructive on that Subject, if it comes within your plan'.
