Mottled spines with gilt ruled compartments, green morocco author and volume labels, gilt palm ornament to centre of compartments. Gilt hashed board edges. Cracking to front joint of Vol. I. Both volumes have worming: Vol I with holes to foot of spine, trails to final blank and rear endpaper and a single hole to final 100 pages, text is slightly affected to some pages; Vol II with trails to both endpapers and to upper margin of first few pages. Light water stain to some pages in Vol. I. Both volumes have occasional pencilled margin markings. A few marks and holes to rear endpaper in Vol. II. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown endpaper in both volumes. Another owner's name to upper margin of title pages, dated 1808. ESTC: T11017. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Contemporary full calf. A worn copy, with the front board detached, lacking front free endpaper, title page is a bit frayed along the right side with a chip to the lower right corner not affecting the letterpress, else very good. Current scholarship identifies Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818) as the most likely author of these famous letters. *ESTC* T11016.

"Junius' poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, for a series of inconsistent measures which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies 'into excesses little short of rebellion.' Vehement, lucid, frequently reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, the letters were polemical masterpieces with such extraordinary knowledge and appreciation of contemporary colonial opinion that they lent moral support to the early revolutionary cause. 'Junius' opposed the Tea Duty, but upheld the legality of the Stamp Act, and prophesied (Dec. 19, 1769) that the colonies aimed at independence" - Dictionary of American History. . Much reprinted following their original appearance in the Public Advertiser, the Junius letters caused something of a sensation at the time for their outspoken attacks on a cosy establishment, and for their support for John Wilkes and the freedom of the press. Woodfall was, in the words of the author's preface 'exposed to an expensive, tyrannical prosecution', and the anonymous author (Sir Philip Francis?) presented him with the 'right, interest and property in these letters' by way of recompense.
