No Jacket. edition not stated. vi+257; top edge of t.p. excised above title, it also has a small hole and several patches of surface rubbing where ownership sigs (?) have been erased, this has caused loss of a couple of characters, tiny worm hole bottom outside corner extending as far as p.224, this actually begins on fr. endpaper where itis a little larger, as it is on succeeding blank fly, very early sig. top p. iii (i.e. leaf after t.p.), some cracking to end gutters but these remain tight, otherwise clean & unmarked. Full leather covers rubbed with some board exposure tp back bottom corner by joint and upper fr. beside fore-edge, panelled sp. has good label and gilt 'I' (Vol.number). Apparently very scarce in any condition.

Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Thomas Sheridan (1719-1788) war ein irischer Schauspieler und Rhetoriklehrer. Herausgeber ist der deutsche Jurist, Lexikograf und Privatgelehrte Renatus Gotthelf Löbel (1767-1799). Größere Bekanntheit erlangte Löbel als Mitautor des Conversationslexikon mit vorzüglicher Rücksicht auf die gegenwärtigen Zeiten, das 1808 von Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus gekauft wurde und einen Vorläufer der heutigen Brockhaus Enzyklopädie darstellt. Die ersten drei Bände des als Löbelsches Conversationslexikon bekannt gewordenen Werkes erschienen in den Jahren von 1796 bis zu Löbels frühem Tod im Jahr 1799. 8°. VIII, 212 u. Titel, 280 S. Thomas Sheridan, son of Thomas Sheridan, friend of DeanSwift, was born at Quilca, in the county of Cavan, in 1721. Thomas Sheridan's lectures onelocution, collected in Lectures on Elocution (1762) and his Lectures onReading (1775), provided directions for marking and reading aloudpassages from literature.

Second edition, mixed issue, 8vo, pp. [2], 409, [1] (ad); contemporary diced russia rebacked, new red morocco label on spine; hinges strengthened with library tape; a good copy. Press figure 8 on p. 6; 3 on pp. 286 and 386. Sheridan was Jonathan Swift's godson and the father of Richard Sheridan the statesman and dramatist. Early in his career he performed on stage and managed a theatre or two, but his lack of success caused him to lecture on elocution, which led to his writing on the English language and grammar.
