Full leather covers rubbed with some board exposure tp back bottom corner by joint and upper fr. beside fore-edge, panelled sp. has good label and gilt 'I' (Vol.number). Apparently very scarce in any condition.

An excellent example, the pages clean, bright, and free of foxing. Lowndes 2380. Sheridan was an Irish stage actor, educator (and, incidentally, godson of Jonathan Swift and father of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan), as well as a major proponent of the elocution movement. In Western classical rhetoric, elocution (the art of delivering speeches) was one of the five core disciplines of pronunciation, emerging as a formal discipline during the eighteenth century. Sheridan's lectures on the subject, collected in Lectures on Elocution (1762) and Lectures on Reading (1775), provided directions for marking and reading aloud passages from literature. N. B. 8vo, pp. xii, 392; contemporary calf, slightly rubbed, label a little chipped, but sound. Early inscription of C. Coates on pastedown. First edition. With two dedications, first to the clergy, and the second to 'All Master and Mistresses of Academies and Boarding Schools'. This is the first part only, of two, but the text seems to have been considerably revised and the dedication dropped from subsequent editions.

Second edition, mixed issue, 8vo, pp. [2], 409, [1] (ad); contemporary diced russia rebacked, new red morocco label on spine; hinges strengthened with library tape; a good copy. Press figure 8 on p. 6; 3 on pp. 286 and 386. Sheridan was Jonathan Swift's godson and the father of Richard Sheridan the statesman and dramatist. Early in his career he performed on stage and managed a theatre or two, but his lack of success caused him to lecture on elocution, which led to his writing on the English language and grammar.
