Some of the coloured triangles partly oxidised. Cloth somewhat faded and rubbed, label marked. Gift inscription to flyleaf: ?Alexander Lauder from Mr Patrik, Dec. 1927? The chief work of David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866), whose artistic leanings were turned towards house-painting by the advice of Sir Walter Scott, for whom he did much work at Abbotsford. He developed his own unique theory of colour harmony, outlined in this work with demonstrations and arguments from (pseudo-)science, and it proved popular and influential: the first edition of 1818 was followed by five more, each expanded and edited.

Fifth edition. - "In April 1820 he commenced work at Abbotsford for Walter Scott. In 1850 he decorated Holyroodhouse for Queen Victoria. In the 1920s, Queen Mary had these decorative schemes painted over, but watercolours commissioned by Victoria in 1863 give some idea of their appearance. Hay was an advocate of imitative finishes such as graining and marbling, and textured paints to imitate brocade fabrics. From 1828, he developed his theory of colour harmony over six successive editions of his book, The Laws of Harmonious Colouring Adapted to Interior Decorations. Hay wrote about his experience decorating Abbotsford for Walter Scott in the sixth edition of his Harmonious Colouring" (Wikipedia). - Stellenweise etwas braunfleckig, sehr schönes Exemplar in einem kongenialen Künstler-Handeinband. Light brown calfskin binding with gold-stamped title on the spine, 6 bands, blind-stamped fillets on the cover, coloured inlays on the cover and gilt edges on the head, in a lined cardboard slipcase. - The magnum opus of the Scottish artist, interior architect and colour theorist D. R. Hay (17981766), first published in 1828. A German translation was published in 1848 under the title 'Die Gesetze der Farbenharmonie, vorzüglich für die Zwecke der Haus-, Stuben- und Decorationsmalerei .' in the series 'Neuer Schauplatz der Künste und Handwerke' in Weimar. - D. R. Hay, a pioneer of colour theory, develops his own theory of colour harmony here. - Slightly stained in places, a very fine copy in a beautifully crafted artist's binding. Sprache: englisch.
