Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First of this edition. Second Edition, first printing of this edition, translated by P "Illustrated with Designs". Color chart frontispiece with 3 other b&W design plates; one is a Chromatic Diagram, with moving part (and tipped in upside down). 12mo. binding as shown, with tooled border and gilt t…itle on board and spine. Very minor bumps to edges and corners. Two small spots to front board. Lightest of wear at head and heel. A very nice copy. This Spanton translation was the second in English, preceded by the Martel translation of 1854 & 1855, De la Loi du Contraste simultané des Couleurs (1839). "one of the most influential treatises on colour written during the nineteenth century. The neo-impressionist painters derived their methods of painting from Chevreul's principles. They found the scientific basis for the division of tones in Chevreul's principles of simultaneous contrast." - DSB. A delightful interlude on the principles of color applied to effects of hats and skin tone. Chevreul, a chemist, was named director of the dye works in Paris. He received many complaints about the dyes being used there. In particular, the blacks appeared different when used next to blues. He determined that the yarn's perceived color was influenced by other surrounding yarns. This led to a concept known as simultaneous contrast which he explored and elaborated in this seminal tome. Chevreul is also linked to what is sometimes called Chevreul's illusion, the bright edges that seem to exist between adjacent strips of identical colors having different intensities.Chevreul's work addressed painting with the aim of reproducing nature as closely as possible, by separating effects of light and chiaroscuro, which the artist must repeat, from those of color contrast, which would apply to the paint's own color and so be exaggerated. His colour principles had a great influence on advanced art in Europe, particularly Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism and Orphism.

Hardcover. 1st Edition. small 8vo. pp. xv, 237, [1] + [2]ads. colour frontis. & 3 plates (1 with overlay). Untrimmed in original blind-stamped cloth, rebacked with spine mounted (spine faded, front free-endpaper replaced, light foxing to plates). First Edition of the English Translation by John Spanton (preceded by E.Martel's tr…anslation of 1854) of Chevreul's De la Loi du Contraste simultané des Couleurs (1839), "one of the most influential treatises on colour written during the nineteenth century." (DSB) Chevreul devised his principles less for scientists than for painters, designers, and decorators, and his colour studies had a particularly important impact on the fine arts: "The neo-impressionist painters derived their methods of painting from Chevreul's principles. They found the scientific basis for the division of tones in Chevreul's principles of simultaneous contrast." (DSB) Including sections on tapestry and carpets, colour printing on textiles, and clothing.

Small 8vo. xvi, 237, (1) pp. Later bespoke decorative binding of dark brown full morocco featuring an ornate design of gilt geometric rules with gilt pointillé sections to the upper panel and a large gilt lettered "C" to the middle, intersecting gilt rules on the same design with blank sections to the rear board, ownership inscr…iption of Anthony Harris to the front free endpaper with his library label to the inner cover. 17 plates printed in colour by Edmund Evans. Minor rubbing to the extremities, occasional minor foxing and light browning to the endpapers, one of the plate tissues with a subtle repair on the verso. After being included in Jack Beddington's book 'Young Artists of Promise' (The Studio, 1957), Harris held various posts in the British educational arts establishment. He started at the St Albans School of Art in 1960 and was the principal there between 1967 and 1975 before becoming head of the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and assistant rector of the London Institute. He was elected to the Chelsea Arts Club in 1975 and was later director and then master of the educational charity Guild of St. George (originally founded by John Ruskin). The binding is unsigned so it us unclear if it was done by Harris himself or a friend or associate of his. In any case, the volume is a handsome and unique copy of a fascinating work.
