In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed on the half-title: "A Monsieur Henry Bénazet avec mes compliments, Alexandra David-Néel" and additionally in Tibetan by Lama A. Yongden. While relatively well-represented institutionally, inscribed copies are notably scarce; an exceptionally well-preserved example of the first novel written for Western readers by a Tibetan lama. The French-Belgian explorer Alexandra David-Néel (1868-1969) travelled extensively in India and Tibet in the first half of the 20th century in order to study Buddhism. Her interest in travel was nurtured from a young age, and while studying in Paris in 1889-90 she immersed herself in Asian languages and joined a number of secret and spiritual societies. In 1917, she travelled to China and took up a three-year residence at the famous Kumbum monastery, where she spent her time translating Buddhist texts into English and French. A talented linguist, she became conversant in multiple Tibetan dialects, affording her access to fascinating experiences unavailable to most other outsiders. Aphur Yongden, also known as Lopon Tenzin Namdak (1899-1955), was a Tibetan lama and spiritual teacher. He first met David-Néel in 1919, and the two quickly formed a close bond. Together they embarked on a journey to Lhasa in 1924, which was fraught with danger and difficulty, as the two had to travel incognito in order to avoid detection by the Tibetan authorities. Despite the numerous challenges the pair eventually reached the capital and spent several months there, immersing themselves in Tibetan culture. Consequently, David-Néel was the first Western woman to visit the sacred city. She formally adopted Yongden as her son in 1929. In her writings, she praised Yongden's wisdom and religious insights, and credited him with deepening her understanding and shaping her spiritual journey. Le Lama aux cinq sagesses is the tale of two lovers overcoming occult forces, while also describing Tibetan people and their spiritualism. It was a collaborative effort, and "the first fictional attempt by a Tibetan to depict true Tibetan life" (Winks, p. 89). David-Néel comments on the reflections prior to commencing the book in her introduction: "Several trips outside Tibet have already allowed my son to make some contact with the western world and some books published there, concerning Tibet, have come into his hands Why, he said to me, do people who have never entered Tibet, who know nothing about the look of the country and the customs of its inhabitants, venture to write about them? Everything I have read of their descriptions is completely incorrect If you so blame those who present a false and grotesque picture of your country in their books, you must contest them with correct descriptions of the men and things here. Write a book that will. I will write your book in my language" (our translation). It was translated into English in 1938. The knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism that David-Néel and Yongden proliferated, has had a profound influence on the spiritual landscape of the West, and its teachings and practices continue to be a source of inspiration. Provenance: the recipient is likely Henry Bénazet, the renowned French journalist, who wrote La Mort du révolte (1932) and L'Afrique française en danger (1947). Howgego IV D7; Robinson, pp. 9-10. Robert Winks (ed.), Asia in Western Fiction, 2017. Small octavo. With frontispiece portrait of Yongden; prospectus loosely laid in. Original wrappers, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered in black and green, top edge cut, others uncut. Wrappers very lightly creased, minor toning throughout. A near-fine copy of a fragile publication.
