Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing. "This book, which is not much more than a pamphlet, may represent the single most significant use of photography as a witness in the medium's history" (Parr & Badger, p. 194). The book "was distributed in Germany by the American War Information unit at the end of World War II in order to convey to the civilian population the enormity of the crimes committed by the Nazis in the name of the German people. The book shows, with a terse accompanying commentary, images from five of the concentration camps liberated by the Allies in 1945 - Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen and Ohrdruf. The names of the individual camps - although now infamous - do not matter in a sense, for the pictures from each show a similar litany of horror - piles of naked corpses, shocked, starved survivors and stunned German civilians brought in to witness what had been happening close to their homes" (ibid.). Martin Parr & Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume I, 2004. Quarto. Original wrappers. Illustrated with 44 photographs. A little rubbed and creased, spine ends splitting a little, small patch of abrasion to rear cover. Still a very good copy of a fragile work.

Contains 44 photographs, taken during the liberation of five concentration camps: Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen and Ohrdruf. First photo publication in postwar Germany. (28) p. The aim of publishing this brochure by the American Office of War Information and the Psychological Warfare Division was to show the German population the horror of the death camps in Germany. However because of the inefficiency of the distribution most of the pamphlets were given to prisoners of war camps. Despite the large number of the publication only a few copies remained. The photographs of the pamphlet played important role as evidences in the Nuremberg Trials. It includes the famous and controversial photo of the Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel in Buchenwald (first published in the "New York Times" on May 6, 1945 with the caption "Crowded Bunks in the Prison Camp at Buchenwald" taken inside Block 56 by Private H. Miller of the Civil Affairs Branch of the U. S. Army Signal Corps on April 16, 1945.) [Parr-Badger I. p. 188; 194., Cornelia Brink - Ikonen der Vernichtung. Thus this book, which is not much more than a pamphlet, may represent the single most significant use of photography as a witness in the medium`s history" (Gerry Badger). This collection of some of the most horrible concentration camp documentary photos you`ll see was put together as part of the US Army`s denazification and re-educationprogram for the German populace after the war. The photos were takenat 5 liberated camps: Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen, & Ohrdruf, and often show German civilians or SS men being forced to bury, move or view bodies.
