Kerr began his naval career as a midshipman in 1879, then as a Lieutenant in the British Navy, becoming the naval attache to Italy, Austria, Turkey, and Greece in 1903. He was later made Commander of the Adriatic Squadron (naval) and recalled to England in 1917 to assist in the formation of the RAF. Kerr was CO of the South-Western Air Force Area in 1918, an area that extended from South Wales to Cherbourg and from Farnborough to the Scilly Islands. This book is a library edition and is in need of re-binding. All the pages are intact although the edges show aging. it bears a Mudies Library sticker on the hard cover.

A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of General Lord Mark Kerr, GCB, with the caption "Lord Mark".

According to the New York Times, If Winter Comes was the best-selling book in the United States for all of 1922. The following year, Fox Film Corporation made it into a motion picture of the same name directed by Harry F. Millarde. Mark Edward Frederic Kerr was the son of the Admiral Lord Frederic Kerr (1818-1896). Kerr joined the Royal Navy in 1877. He served in the Naval Brigade during the Egyptian War of 1882 and in Sudan in 1891 before becoming Naval Attache in Italy, Austria, Turkey and Greece in 1903. In 1913, he succeeded Vice Admiral Lionel Grand Tufnell as head of the British Naval Mission to Greece, and as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Hellenic Navy, a post he retained until 1915. As commander of the Greek Navy at the outbreak of World War I, Kerr helped keep Greece out of the war. In 1914, while on leave from his duties as head of the Greek Navy, Kerr learned to fly, making him the first British flag officer to become a pilot. He was awarded his Aviator's Certificate no. 842 on 16 July 1914. In May 1916 Kerr was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Adriatic Squadron. Kerr returned to Great Britain in August 1917 and the Admiralty seconded him to the Air Board to assist in the formation of the Air Ministry and the Royal Air Force. In late 1917, when the Government were considering the recommendations of the Smuts Report, Kerr intervened in its favor. His "bombshell memorandum" correctly identified a new heavy bomber that the Germans had just brought into service, although the memorandum overstated its payload capability. Kerr was granted the rank of major-general and served as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff at the Air Ministry in the months before the RAF came into being. He retired from the RAF in October 1918. Published on February 27, 1886, depicting General Lord Mark Ralph George Kerr GCB (15 December 1817 - 17 May 1900), a British Army officer who served in the Crimean War and in IndiaVanity Fair was a British magazine known for its social, political, and literary content. It gained fame particularly for its caricatures of prominent figures of the time. These caricatures, drawn by renowned artists, captured the essence of their subjects with a mix of humor, satire, and artistry.

8vo, pp. x, 406; 20 illustrations on 17 plates, 1 folding and in color; original red cloth stamped in gilt on spine; top of spine and top corner of rear cover waterstained; all else very good and sound. Inscribed to "William Wilson from Mark Kerr, author, Aug. 24, 1939." Also, with an A.L.s. from Kerr to Wilson mounted on the recto of the frontispiece, same date: "Here is the book. I've written in it. It belonged to someone called de Winton apparently as that name is in it. The situation looks grave so I am sending it off at once." Newspaper clipping on Kerr's 1944 death also mounted on flyleaf. Kerr has amplified and/or corrected the text in ink on approximately 8 pages, one rather lengthy.
