A scarce signed document by Ambrosio Spinola (1569-1630), the Genoese-born general in Spanish service and one of the principal commanders of the Army of Flanders during the later stages of the Eighty Years' War. Entering Spanish service at his own expense, he rose to the rank of maestre de campo general and gained lasting renown for his campaigns in the Low Countries, particularly the siege of Breda (1624-1625). Beyond his military command, Spinola played a central role in diplomatic and administrative affairs, acting as intermediary between Brussels and Madrid, while sustaining the war effort in part through his own financial resources. Written in June 1628, the letter belongs to a period of sustained military pressure and administrative strain within the Spanish monarchy following the resumption of war after the Twelve Years' Truce. The Spanish Netherlands, governed from Brussels by the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, depended on coordination with the court of Philip IV in Madrid, where strategic direction and financial control were concentrated under the Count-Duke of Olivares. Spinola, recently returned to Spain, was engaged in negotiations concerning the conduct of the war, the provisioning of the army, and cooperation with Imperial forces, at a moment when the effectiveness of this dual system of authority was under increasing strain. The letter is addressed to "V.E." (Vuestra Excelencia), a senior court official, most likely Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares (1587-1645), chief minister to Philip IV and the central figure in the direction of Spanish policy, acting as intermediary with the King. The text repeatedly refers to the King, Philip IV, and the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, reflecting the divided structure of authority between Madrid and Brussels. Writing from temporary lodging at court, Spinola combines personal justification with strategic recommendation.
