"Historiography has quite neglected the romantic and fascinating history of the underground and free-professing Jews in colonial Brazil, who formed the earliest Jewish community in America and became the "Jewish Pilgrim Fathers" of New York, as well as of Jamaica, Barbados, and other Jewish communities in the Caribbean area.
