Zustand: Sehr gut. 80 S. mit zahlr. Fotos. Gutes Ex. - In the land of Zen gardens, Shinto temples, gleaming skyscrapers, advanced technologies and contemplative Buddhas, Sally Larsen has compiled a photo essay that speaks directly from the heart of contemporary Japan while at the same time making a poignant commentary on some of the basic themes of Pacific Rim culture. Larsen's Japlish photo essay is a living anthology of "found poetry" obliquely reminiscent of Irving Penn's classic Worlds in a Small Room, which likewise reveals cultures around the world through the social lens of fashion. Both artists share the same broad strokes; the difference is that Larsen's small rooms are the crowded, fast-moving streets. Japlish is a term used in Tokyo to describe Euro-American expressions found in Japanese newspapers. English becomes incorporated, sometimes misspelled, always with eccentric phrasing. Larsen's belief that Japlish is becoming a new language used by young people to deal with the world view they share is what committed her to shaping this photo essay. She points out that the Japanese youth are fascinated with everything from Brazilian music to Elvis Presley, from ethnic African rhythm to American rap. Qften borrowing images from the media, reflecting modern times and social concerns, the phrases found in the photographs, such as "Unservative Extase Street Snob No Kiss for Mother," are amusing and surreal. Others, like "Feel the Darkness" and "Rock a Rebel Love & Hatered Fury Blow in the Mind," have an ominous quality. Some are truly haiku-like in their leaps of perception, such as "Hate and War Navy Manners." Others absolutely defy description: "Shoe-Shine Boy 58 You Can't Have Both Don't Be Greedy." What Larsen has synthesized with her search of the streets of Tokyo, the Blade Runner-like mazes of Osaka and the gardens of Kyoto and Nikko is an exciting vocabulary that gives voice to the international sensibility prevalent in Japanese society. Her quest has involved six month-long trips over six years. Her candid, straightforward style lends an air of spontaneity to this extended visual essay, creating a spiritual dance. As the eye of the observer ranges over the many images, they take on the effect of celebration. While passionately involved with Japanese sensibilities, Larsen has been able to articulate common themes and cultural trends without lapsing into cliche.
