Illustrations Wilhelm Heine: A German-born painter and draftsperson who accompanied the Perry Expedition. His highly detailed field sketches, watercolours, and drawings documented Japanese landscapes, people, architecture, and historic diplomatic encounters. Eliphalet Brown Jr.: The expedition's official daguerreotypist. He captured early photographs of Japan during the journey.
