Erstausgabe
First edition, House Doc. 66. 8vo. 34 pp. With the ownership signature of Henry St. George Tucker at the head of the title page; Tucker (1780-1848; jurist, U.S. Congressman, 1815-1819) is best known for a trio of legal treatises, Commentaries of the Laws of Virginia (1836-1837), Lectures on Constitutional Law (1843), and A Few Lectures on Natural Law (1844). He lived in Winchester, Virginia, most of his adult life, heading a private law school there, and served as head of the Virginia Court of Appeals, 1831-1841, and as professor of law at the University of Virginia, 1841-1845. Facing the title page is written enigmatically, probably in another hand, "For the Winchester Triumvirate. Bound behind: (MONROE, James) Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting the Correspondence between the Department of State, and the Spanish Minister, Residing Here, Shewing the Present State of the Relations between the Two Governments. Washington, (DC): Printed by E. De Krafft, 1818. First edition, House Doc. 155. 8vo. 91 pp. Text block browned, else very good. Contemporaryhalf-sheep and patterned boards (rubbed), gilt rules on spine. (#6366). Perry, the War of 1812 naval hero, clashed with the marine captain while serving as commander of the Java on a Mediterranean cruise. The court martial, reported here, resulted in a reprimand for both officers and a later duel between the pair that resulted in no injuries. The second pamphlet reports on progress between the United States and Spain as negotiations toward the cession of Florida were conducted by John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onis. Though various members of the Tucker family possessed large libraries, books owned by them are uncommon in trade.
