Erstausgabe
Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. First English language edition of a Swiss clergyman's denunciation of Irvingism and Mormonism. xxiv, 94, [2] pp. with two pages of advertisements at rear. Bound in publisher's blindstamped green cloth boards lettered in gilt. Very Good. Light wear and soiling to cloth, short split to upper end of front joint, rubbing, and LIGHT fading to spine. Previous owner bookplate to front pastedown, contents toned. Scarce. The emergence of new Christian denominations in the nineteenth century disturbed members of established churches. James Bridges opens his preface with the following declaration: "The revival of religion in the nineteenth century was followed, as truth ever is, by a variety of disturbing heresies. It seems to be a law of our fallen world, that where God works, the Devil counterworks; and his most insidious action is not so much where he disseminates direct infidelity, as where he insinuates corruption into the purities of the faith." Emilius Guers saw Irvingism and Mormonism as two related corruptions, and warned against the "abyss of error" the slightest departure from God's Word could cause.
